I have recently built myself a 338-06. I have been using once fired 30-06 and 270 win brass to make brass. A friend just offered me a bunch of once fired 270 brass and I said yes because anything free is good. Some of the brass he gave me is nickle plated. I have heard before that you can not size up nickle brass but I have also heard that it is ok. So which is it? Thanks ahead of time for your help.

The brass was free, so there's nothing to lose by testing a few.
The plating is brittle compared to the underlying brass. Expanding the neck may cause the plating to crack. By itself that's not so bad, but the problem is the cracks in the nickel propogate into the substrate, too. I'm not going to calculate a number for the strain that occurs by necking up now, but it's considerable. But here's what I think; if it works, it works. Just keep an eye on the brass and don't be surprised by short life in the necks. |
