Got a 30.06 empty?

Put it into the chamber.

Put the bolt in the rifle.  Put the ejector spring and ejector in the bolt.  Put the firing pin in the bolt.  Push the bolt face against the base of the 30.06 empty (this will force the ejector/spring into place in the bolt.  Put the extractor spring/pin and extractor in the bolt, pull the bolt back and remove the 30.06 empty from the chamber.

The 30.06 empty has the same diameter base as the .308 brass and is about 1/2" longer, so it'll stick out of the chamber enough to compress the ejector/spring and still give you room to install the extractor.

Oh, I usually have to smack the extractor fully into position with the back end of a screw driver.  Just turn it around in your hand and hit the extractor and the screw driver handle will drive it down into place.

Helps to put a tag of tape over the back to hold the firing pin in place while you get everything arranged.

Agreed.  No reason to spend the money on a bolt tool for non production shop or arsenal work.   Unless you just have to have it.

You can similarly disassemble a bolt by compressing the springs up against the 30-06 case.  Turn the rifle over and use a small punch to press the stem of the extractor out.  May also be able to lift the extractor with a screwdriver from the top.  I use an M10 combo tool (the handle for an M1 Garand cleaning kit).  It's made to chamber and has a little lug on it that you put under the extractor.  Then you just rotate it to lift the extractor up.  The M10 is terrible for reassembly though.

All of this also works on an M1 Garand, but you'll need to wrap a strip of duct tape around the case mouth enough to keep the extractor from going under the lip at the top of the barrel.
