I'm starting to reload 223 and I need help with a starting point for my loads. My components are:
* H2267B BULK (.224) 22 CAL 55 GR Full Metal Jacket from Wideners *Hodgdon H335 *Wolf 223 Small rifle primers - the newer brass cup ones that are a little hotter than the small magnum rifle primers *Assorted once fired brass (overwhelming majority fired from my rifles) both headstamped 223 and 5.56 I am aware of the maximum loads allowed. Where should I start building my loads up with the components I will be reloading with? I would like to do 2 or 3 different batches to see what results I will be producing. Any input is much appreciated! Kevin |

Generaly recommended practice is to select a start load either 10% lower than maximum, or the minimum load from a manual if it's greater than 90% of maximum.
That's the approach I recommend for new reloaders. Increment the charges by 0.4 grains from minimum to maximum charge, or 0.3 grains if that suits you. |

I would say start smack dab in the middle and work up and down from there. Not good advice to give to a new reloader. With different components that the load data you have, Always begin at the "start" load. Which is the lowest powder charge listed and work up from there, watching for pressure signs as you work up. This is the safe, tried and true method. And the best way for a new reloader. Good luck Kevin. |
