The ventilated handguard has 4 rows of holes, if my eyes serve me correctly. That means it's a WWII model of bayonet adapter for the Winchester 1897 shotgun. Or a repro.
The boss for the bayonet is missing, that's the hole that the stud on the M5A1 bayonet fits. It's supposed to take a M1917 Enfield bayonet. Is there a "W" stamped on the bayo adapter somewhere? |

I dont see any markings on the adapter, it could be a repro but if it is its of good quality. I dont know what you mean by the boss is missing the M51A fits just fine on the adaptor. |
| This is just my guess, but I'd say it is a worked over reproduction handguard. There is a company on Ebay that used to sell them as well as IMA Surplus. It used to take a 1917 pattern bayonet. It was ground down and had a hole drilled for a M5 bayonet. It was made to go on Winchester model 1897 & 12 shotguns. It isn't limited to that model. I have seen them used on Ithaca 37, Winchester 1200, etc. In fact, I have a Win model 12 in my safe that I have been thinking of putting one of these on. |
