| Last year I bought a used Marlin 60 for $80 and I really like it except I can't shoot it very well with the iron sights. I want to get a scope for it but I don't want to spend more on the scope than the rifle. It will just be used for plinking and maybe some small game but mostly just informal plinking. It isn't super tricked out or anything just a plain old model 60 so I don't need anything fancy. I like the way it feels now so I don't want to add a massive scope on top and throw off the feel and balance. I've seen some cheap Simmons and stuff but don't know anything about them or if they are any good. Any recommendations? |

Simmons, Bushnell, Tasco and other inexpensive scopes would be fine for a .22 like that. If you had aspirations of shooting out to 200 yards or so with it, it'd be wise to spend more on a scope with repeatable adjustments, nicer glass, and better reticle options, but for something that'll probably not be used for anything more than shooting squirrels out to 60 yards or so, inexpensive glass would be fine.
ETA- A lot of the price of the better glass comes from the repeatable adjustments and better associated mechanisms. If you don't need them, there's not much sense in paying for them. On the other hand, if you look at the inexpensive scopes, you hear more horror stories about their "target/varmint" type scopes than you do about their regular scopes, because people get them, crank on the knobs, and the low-quality parts and workmanship start to shine through. |

I had a AO model on a 10/22. Nothing special but worked great. |

there's also the option of Tech Sites which would give you AR style aperture sights on the rifle and a longer sight radius. MUCH better than the stockers and at your price point.
you might try looking for a used Nikon rimfire scope, i think it's their Propoint line. if you're lucky you might find one in the price range you're looking for. |
| I have a BSA Sweet 22 on one of my 10/22's and I love it. It's crystal clear, the elevation turrets are very convienent and with minimal recoil like a .22 or .17, it'll hold zero for years. I wouldn't put it on my Model 700, but then again, that's why its called a "Sweet 22." In terms of clarity, I can't see a discernible difference between it and my Bushnell Elite 4200. I think it cost me like $40 from SWFA on clearance. They still had some left last time I checked. |
