My father has a new one that is 15+ years old. He was trying to fire it with just powder and wadding for fun today and only the percussion cap and a little powder would go off, and it wouldn't fire.

Generally how much powder do you put in them  when not firing a ball?

I was thinking he didn't put enough powder in and the wadding was covering the flash hole.

ETA: The barrel says "Jukar Spain.....45 Cal.   Black Powder only"  On it. He is using 4F blackpowder and new CCI percussion caps. I believe it is a Kentucky Long Rifle copy.

In mine , 50 T/C 90 grain 2F , half a paper towel big bang
2F rifle,  3F pistol,  4F flash pan for a flintlock , be careful with 4F in the barrel , I would not put a ball in with that.

FFFFg is for priming pans.

Try 50-55gr of FFFg.

If the rifle does not say Dixie or CVA on it, I would guess it is closer to 25 years old.

He isn't trying to shoot a ball, just powder and wadding for noise. All we have is FFFF powder, we cannot find any locally anymore, the place we used to buy it from stopped stocking it.

Should we just save the 4F stuff for the canon that it works fine in?

Yes, I would save the FFFFg powder for something else.

Also, a hunting load for a .45 caliber rifle would start ~65-70gr.

Bummer that you cannot find anymore.

WHOA! Unless your cannon is some sort of noisemaker not designed to shoot projectiles, 4Fg is not the correct powder to use. 4Fg is for priming the pan on flintlocks.

If you want to shoot blanks in the .45 rifle, get some 3Fg, use about 40 to 50 grains, and some wadding.  That'll make a good noise.

However, it sounds like the flash from the cap in your dad's rifle is not getting to the bore because the flash channel is clogged.  Try this: With the gun unloaded (no powder, no ball), cap the nipple and point it at some grass on the ground. Pop the cap. If the grass moves, the flash channel is clear. If not, it's clogged.

Well teh Canon is somewhat homemade. My father works at a hydrolics company and he had his friends in the shop make it for him. It doesn't really look like a canon, but I call it that. It is purely a noise maker and NOT for shooting anything..

If you pay attention to 23-24 seconds int eh video you can hear it bouncing off the mountains. (but this video has sucky sound since its from my cell phone.l

This is only 5 caps full of powder, Now sure the weight of what a cap holds, but its larger then a .223 case,  we've done up to 10 caps full.

That doesn't look like a cannon to me, it looks like a pipe bomb that you haven't managed to blow up, yet.  Unsafe.  Pop over to graybeard outdoors and browse through their cannon section.

The OP's rifle probably isn't firing due to crud/oil/sludge in the nipple and flame/ flash channel.

First: Is the cap popping on hammer drop?
If yes then...................
Unload the gun best you can.
Remove the nipple(use a correct sized nipple wrench if you have one. A small crescent wrench will work a lot of times.). Be careful removing it. Don't round off the corners.
Use a paper clip or other strong wire to clear the hole thru the nipple.
Also poke thru the flame/flash channel into the main charge area of the barrel(if you can.) Sometimes a flexible wire like a pipe cleaner or heavy monofilament fishing line works better on the 90degree corner in the flame channel.
If you made the barrel CLEAR try blowing some air thru it. I usually just blow air from the muzzle using my mouth. You should be able to hear/feel the air coming out the channel.
This has to be clear for the flame from the cap to reach the main charge. ONLY DO THIS IF THE RIFLE HAS BEEN UNLOADED!
Re-assemble. Load and attempt to refire.
If it still misfires it could be the powder or the caps. Use fresh.

If the rifle can not be unloaded and the above didn't work................
Remove the nipple, drop a FEW GRANULES of powder down into the flame channel.
Re-install nipple. Recap. Attempt re-fire.
It should go off.

4F isn't going to hurt anything if you're just shooting paper wads. You can still use it as a main charge just reduce the charge down to 20-30 grains in a .45caliber bore.

Jukar made guns were real common 30-40 years ago. Not great quality but usable. Just keep loads on the low end.
