Since I had good luck with my OKC RAT-1 post, I thought I'd tap the well again.... I searched but didn't really find what I'm looking for... Here's the skinny. I'm looking for a multi-tool that I can add to my duty belt via pouch. It must have the typical items (ie: cross and blade screwdrivers, etc) but I also need a pliers/wire cutter. I work in the field on a vast number of unrelated items, from squad cars to hydraulics to laptops and the list goes on and on. I carry a number of tools in my squad, but sometimes I don't have the luxury of running back to it to get what I need. Would like to find something that doesn't break the bank, but I will buy once/cry once. I went ahead and cross post'd this in the survival tool forum as well, because sometimes people have different opinions on what's cool vs. what's usable/viable in the field. Guys who work on cars/PC's will have a unique perspective as I may be called upon to do both, amongst other things.... |

I have had my leathermn wave for 4 years and it is still GTG never an issue thus far. For the money i love it and got the bit kit to keep extra drivers and such with it and it is even more useful. It is my EDC on my belt work and leisure. I work on cars and in the woods for play and have always been happy with it.

| I love my Leatherman Wave (the original, no extra bits) I have used it for everything and one time my younger brother broke one off the flat blades and and one of the plier tips; all I had to do was send it in and it came back with new parts and even a sharpening on both knives all for free other than shipping. I have 2 others and I know my dad has had a few for a very long time. IMHO, they are some of the best. |

I have multiple 5th revision Gerber multitools that I use. I have one in every room of my house, one in my truck, one on my desk. I'm a huge fan. I am also a Gerber Multi-Tool (1991 or 92' original model pre-lock) fan I really like their blunt nose pliers vs. the needle nosed versions. I have one of the newer Gerber Crucials that I got for Christmas it does not seem to be of the level of quality as my old multi-tool. Although it is only 7-8 months old it is already looser than my old multi-tool. That said I purchased a Leatherman Wave for my father several years ago (when that model first came out) and he really likes it. |

He has carried the same wave for over 2 years and uses the living shit out of it. I just got one after seeing how much he loves his. My cousin has the SOG and really likes it. American made and the pliers are very good. Smooth operation as well. Slighty less tools than the wave IIRC. ETA the MUT posted above is the EOD version which I would avoid personally. They swap out 3 regular tools for 2 explosive specific tools you won't really have any real use for unless you regularly deal with blasting caps. Other buddy has the reg MUT and the surge along with a wave. Mut is cool as hell but its heavy. Doubles as a hammer. Surge is basically a slightly larger wave. |

Some good recommendations already.
A Wave is hard to beat. If you go large format, and really use the pliers, a SOG powerlock is a good choice. The MUT would also be a good call if you go with a large tool. (BTW, a feature not often mentioned about the Powerlock, isyou can disassemble it and swap out the various tools. So, you can customize it to fit your needs. Big part of why I have one. It rides in my car, primarily because of the superior gear driven pliers. Other wise I have a Skeletool CX for EDC, and a Multitasker for the gun bag, with a MUT coming for a birthday present....) |
