I'm taking a low light pistol class this month, and you need a hand held light. I figured I should probably get a good one, so I was looking at some Surefire lights.
The two I was looking at are the G2 and the G2Z Combat Light The ones I saw today were the incandescent models, but I can't seem to find them on the site. Is there any benefit to getting the G2Z over the normal G2? I'm not really looking to spend much more than $100 on a light, and these two seem to fit the bill. |

I have a couple of G2 LEDs, and also have a light by Fenix called the TK12 R2. I like the Fenix a ton, and it is a much better light in my opinion. The Fenix TK 12 has six modes of brightness and has 240 lumens for distance work, and can step down to 5-8 lumens if needed for map reading. I usually leave mine at 90 lumens for home defense, but can quickly turn the bezel to ramp up to 240 in a second if needed for outdoors.
Fenix lights are less than $100 and are awesome. If you go with a Surefire, than get one from TNVC (vendor listed above on AR-15) and get one of their G2s with the Malkoff drop-in that ups the lumen output to something you can work with. It won't cost you much more and is a much better bulb. |

The G2Z has the narrowed body and o-ring grips so it'd be a better choice if you use a technique that puts the light between yur fingers. Otherwise, they are pretty much the same.
Most Lowes stores have G2Ls and 6PLs on the shelves. I think they are $68 and $86 respectively. |

Get the LED version of either
I use the G2L as lights throughout the house then Z models previously as a lowlight gunfight light however times change - now there are decent weapon lights like the X300 and the LX2 handheld light which has been my EDC for the better part of 10 months but another thought is, what does the Instructor recommend? |

As usual eggrolly's Jedi wisdom is strong.
Here is my 2 cents I've got several Surefire Lights (and a host of others various flashlights), a couple of G2's, a G3, P6 and a Centurian but time and time again my go to light for everything is my SF Defender LED. It's just a great general purpose light but if your budget is $100 I'd look at the G2 LED. For low light gun fighting however nothing is better than a weapon mounted light. If your taking a pistol course it of course gets complicated by also having to obtain a compatable holster and good weapons light like the SF X300 will set you back an additional couple of bills +, but it's well worth it. You will still need to have some type of handheld light too. You always need to have something for administrative range work, you don't want to be searching for something dropped on the ground with your weapon mounted light. |

Thanks for all the help. I'll look into the G2 LED. I have a weapons light for both my glock, and my AR, but I don't have a suitable holster for my pistol with the light attached. I'd guess that is the reason he is asking us to bring hand held lights.
You talking a duty holster or a concealed holster?? The only time I don't have my light on my gun is when it's my G26 and I'm carrying it as my primary. Get that squared away first! -SleeperShooter ETA: Dammit, forgot I wasn't still in the BOTS section. I was thinking you're LE and didn't have a holster for your duty light. What's the make / model of your gun / light setup?? Someone might have something they're not using and can sell ya' pretty cheap. -SS |

If you decide to go with SureFire, may I also recommend you upgrade the switch.
I prefer the Z49 because the collar helps prevent inadvertent activation with out all the twisting of the OEM tail cap. |

get a surefire 6p/g2 LED and be done with it This. I have both a G2 and a 6P, both were incandescent to begin with. I was blown away by just how bright such tiny little lights were, then the battery ran out. Soon I swapped out the bulb on my 6P, that was sometime about 9 months ago. I would previously go through 2 CR123s in about 2 weeks. Since the swap, I am on my second set of batteries, in 9 months, and the flashlight is brighter to boot. The 6P is now my EDC. The G2 is a backup that stays in my wife's car, along with a battery/bulb carrier. |

bear in mind, that the G2 series on the incadescent side, had PLASTIC bezels, the LED versions have METAL bezels.... to address the heat issues stemming from longer periods of ON time that people were getting.
an undocumented aspect of an X2/300 light mounted on a G19/17 platform is the striking / out of battery issue. with the light bezel sticking out further than the muzzle - you can perform a "muzzle strike" with a much reduced likelihood of going out of battery as a result. moreso for the 19 vice the 17.... just a thought |

I CCW without the light, but add the light usually when I'm home for the night. Thanks for all the help. I think I'm going to get one of the G2 LED lights. |

For all of your information I just got off of Surefires web site and they have done away with the original 6P/G2 LED for a 2 Hr run time 120 Lum. lamp. I have also looked around and the last of the 11-12 hr run time lights and lamps are selling out. I picked up 2 lamps from SKD, its all they would let me put in the cart.
I have had 2 for about 3 years now. A 6P I put a LED lamp in for daily carry and a 6P LED mounted on my AR/ACR. I like the shock resistance and long run time of the LED lamp. To bad they are changing things. By far the best 123A battery light I have used for personal carry and general use so far. |
