I just picked up a box of hornady amax 75 grain 223s.  I wanted to shoot them using Accurate 2230 powder in a 1 in 7 twist barrel.  Anyone have the low and max pressure load data?

I also have some varget laying around if anyone prefers using that over the 2230 and has a load for it.

hornady's manual is saying 75 gr a-max c.o.l 2.390" 19.4grs- 2200 fps, 20.4- 2300, 21.5- 2400, 22.5- 2500, 23.5- 2600 on the varget. 23.5 grs is the max pressure load. nothing listed in the 7th eddition for aa 2230.

you don't have a hornady manual?

edit to add- these numbers are for a 1/9 twist barrel. someone should also verify this to be correct.

Probably not a good powder for heavy bullets in the 223.
That is bullet meant to shot single shot.

Did you look at the Accurate Web site? They do not list anything cause it is too fast a powder to make work

Did you consult the Hornady Manual?Best to have a copy on your reloading bench to consult before buying a powder and a bullet you may not want to deal with the extra work of loading

Do you have a Hornandy LNL OAL tool to set up the OAL or similar tool The bullet seems to like to be near the lands for best results....

A buddy gave me the bullets and they are the first hornady ones I've shot.  I normally shoot 55grn hornady fmj's.  I don't have a hornady manual, mainly because I haven't needed one till now.  Those were the only two powders I have on hand, so I was pretty much hoping they'd work.  If not, oh well. might try and sell em or get a powder that will work.

And I load on a dillon 550

the varget will work. AA 2230 burns too fast for the 75 gr bullet. hornady has a load for the 68 gr but not the 75. the 75 has to be single shot because it is too long for mag lenght. if your ok with that, load away. after you buy and read the hornady manual......... six times. it's a good read.

edit- what gun are you loading for?

I'll start on the low end with the varget and see what I can do.  I plan on buying a book, I just live 80 miles from a town with a book store and I won't be going that way for a few weeks

Nevermind, been reading that the bullet is too long for the mag

What have people been telling you?  They are meant to be shot single shot in an AR platform.

I didn't plan on using them as single shot.  At first I thought they would load into a mag, but thats not the case.  The COL is 2.39

The Hornady 75g BTHP #2279's can be loaded to mag length if you want to stay with the Hornady brand.
