I have a 9mm P30 that I had asked for some reloading suggestions on. So I bought some W231 powder and Barrys plated 115 grain bullets, as suggested. The Winchester literature stated that I could use a charge between 4.3 grains to 4.8grns. I started at 4.5 and worked up to 4.7 and went to the range - problem was that even at 4.7 grains the last cartridge in the magazine always got stuck between the slide and the chamber, ie it never locked back like the gun normally does with with cheap American Eagle 115 grain ammo. The cases that did eject seemed to fly vertically as opposed to the store ammo flew out to my right.
The simple answer would seem to be that the charge I am using is not enough, but according to the literature it seems that I am already pushing the limit. Suggestions? PS I did give the P30 a through cleaning after I bought it. |
| I just loaded and shot a crap load of Rainier 115 HP's in my G17. Used 4.4 gr of 231. COL is 1.065. Don't recall what they chronoed at (yep, you guessed it, too lazy to look) but they shot great. I do recall shooting some Magtech factory 115 FMJ at the same time and they were the same average speed but the ES and SD was much smaller. As a matter of fact I do recall the SD at 4. I would check your COL and then check your mag and/or slide stop. |

Lee Modern Reloading, Second Edition. Page 532. 115 grain JACKETED bullet Start 4.3 - 1010fps, Max 4.8 - 1120ps.32,100cup pressure. C.O.L. 1.095.
Lee doesn't list a charge for lead or plated using Win231. Your loading plated to high side of jacketed spec. @ 4.8. ... . Your C.O.L. is too high. Suggest you lower your C.O.L. to 1.095 with a charge no higher than 4.6. |
