I am trying to trim some new Winchester brass and am having some difficulty. The pilot on my RCBS trim pro will not go into the case neck, so I cant even trim my brass. I have sized brass with the same setup before and never had a problem. Just seems that the necks on the Win brass is narrower. ANy help?
Not sure if I understand your problem 100%. If you are not Full length sizing prior to trimming. The necks might be "narrow". I always FL size new brass b4 trimming. If you are sizing prior to trimming new brass and have your problem i'd be looking at your expander ball. hope this helps. dcl
I'll add a little, since I re-read that and it is a little short on info. I full length sized 300 cases, 200 win, and 100 RP. RP's measured 1.755 and the Win measured 1.770 after sizing. All were sized at the same time and I did not adjust the die in between. I did not trim the RP as they were GTG. I loaded the RP's and the bullets seated fine. I went to trim the win brass and the pilot on my rcbs trim pro would not go into the case neck...too narrow I suppose. The only way I could get it in there was to slam that fucker, and I would rather not do that to every piece of brass. Especially because the pilot would get stuck in the case and I had to pull it out with pliers.

The neck has probably thickened or was thick to begin with (if new).
What you've described..........is one of the problems I ran into, while doing trimming with my Lyman (way back when). And, unless the pilot is absolutely on the centerline........the spinning action could also enlargen the neck. Another bad situation. I solved my problem by switching how I trim. I bought a Gracey. The Giraud and the Possum Hollow are also good choices. As they don't need to put anything into the neck while trimming. Aloha, Mark PS...........you could also chuck the pilot into a drill and spin/polish the diameter. |
1.770?? wow thats pretty long for new brass. Just a few things that might work. run the inside deburring tool on a case. maybe the brass has a "lip". I'd be checking to see what the brass measures right after resizing versus the diameter of the trimmer pilot. Have you tried to seat a bullet in the win brass after sizing? Sounds like alot of springback in the brass. Not a good thing. Cases that spring back alot don't last to long. Wish I had a better answer for ya. dcl
I think the answer to this will be no....but, if I adjust the die and run them through again, would that help? If no, then I will just scrap this junk and not buy win brass anymore. I thought it was supposed to be good stuff, but the RP brass that I have is alot better.
