CMP came through for me.  God Bless 'em.

I ordered an M1 around late March (?) and on 22 May received an "We regret that we will not be able to fill the order that you submitted" e-mail.  Some of you will remember my thread of great disappointment in this very forum.

Anyway, I kept the order active, and this week was blessed to receive a rack grade Greek.

I'm a total M1 neophyte (newbie), so any comments, observations, info, opinions, pointers, and so on (on the rifle or on resources for learning) are welcomed!

************** UPDATE **************

I took my "rack grade" CMP Garand to the Hampton, VA gun show this past weekend, and had Gus Fisher (Gus's Garands) give it a once-over.

He adjusted the tension on the rear sight adjustment knobs, and actually replaced the windage knob with one that worked better.

While checking the trigger group, he felt the hammer spring should be replaced, and did so.

He thought the op rod spring might not have too much life left, so we replaced that too.

He thought the stock (USGI) was better than many rack grade stocks and fit well, and thought the op rod, gas cylinder, and other stuff checked looked good.

He had checked everything but the barrel condition, and said something to the effect of "well, it must be the bore condition that knowed this down to rack grade, because everything else is pretty nice."

So then he checks the bore...  TE 3.6, ME 1.5.   He was surprised.

"This should be a service grade rifle.  You should be very pleased."

I am.

I also picked up some Greek M2 Ball ammo at the show.  (I've got to update my gun club membership letter with the CMP so I can order some ammo.)

On to the pictures...

Barrel marking:

A little Google with the SN tells me the born-on date is November 1943:

Bolt marking:

These pics are "fresh out of the box."  I haven't had it out of the stock yet.

I know I have lots to learn, including how to check the condition of the bore.

I'd say you did great, that receiver has all the park in the bolt locking areas.  Looks like a fresh repark and rebarrel and stored.  Looks just what the above poster said, they gave you one of the barreled actions they had.  I'd bet it's a service grade barrel.  and that stock looks better than any that came on my field grades.

O a down and dirty muzzle test is to stick a GI or Greek ball round into the muzzle, pointy end first.  A great bore would show about 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch of exposed bullet.  A relatively good bore would show 1/8 or more.  If it inserts to the brass you're down the road a ways on barrel wear.  Not a true gage but an indicator and besides even worn barrels can shoot suprisingly well.

Good catch -- I hadn't noticed that.

Yeah, I'd better get busy buying ammo.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Cool, is there a flat spot on the top of the gas cylinder ring?

Nice rifle.  If this is your first WELCOME TO THE CLUB.

Only comments from me would be to buy ammo, buy grease, buy a combo tool, and buy a dewey or tipton rod.  Then buy more ammo, and take it to the range--she's a shooter, not a queen.

Like so?

What's the significance of that?

If it was round it would be a Winchester cylinder.

Congrats!

Now take it apart and clean all that cosmoline (sp?) off and reassemble!

I bought my first one at the CMP in '04 and the guys I was with wanted me to shoot it

in the match the next day. I just put it together for the first time, never shot it and

they wanted me to leave the rifle I borrowed and practiced with to compete with an

unproven rifle.

I used the one I practiced with and beat both of them! Maybe that's why they
wanted me to use the new one!

I have some info I can get together. I can photocopy and mail to you if you want. Not
much but may be useful. Just IM me. I just put it in a storage unit - it might take a few
days to get together. (It's packed kinda tight!)

Update in first post!

Looks like they cobbled you one together using a barrelled receiver. I'd say you did good! Those barrelled receivers usually come with barrels that are like new.

Well called, guys!
