Just picked up this new 1911 Sig Tac Ops! Can't wait to start loading for a 1911 as this is my first. Any tips or tricks I should be aware of?

Man you're just the guy I was hoping to chime in with. I think I may just buy a couple boxes of UMC or WWB to run through it and from there I want to hop into reloading for it. I just picked it up last night so I haven't brought it to the range yet. Initial startup I'd like to pick up some FMJ from whomever Hornady Winchester etc. etc. and use some HP38 as I've had good luck with that recently in my other .45.

Sounds like you got it figured out. I always thought Sig, 1911s were cool.

Yea, buy some WBB 230 grain ball. If there's a feed issue WWB will flush it out. From there if'n it were me. I'd want to start working up some competition grade lead, plated, and jacketed stuff. Starting with lead first. You could stay busy developing loads for your Sig for months.

What kind of lead bullets should I buy?

I suggest Missouri Bullets, good bullets, price and shipping.

Also some good info on bullet hardness on their site.

Can I shoot .452 diameter bullets through this gun? I thought it was .451 only?

.451 jacketed

.452 lead bullets

I feel like there is a few different steps when loading lead as compared to jacketed?

Lead loads the same as jacketed. You will be well advised to buy Lee factory crimp die. Depending what press I load with or what load. I load with a seater die and taper crimp or seater die and fcd.

If finishing with taper crimp its imperative to case gage every cartridge or be embarrased at range when one hangs up that wouldn't have case gaged.

I load lots of lead, have close to 250lbs stashed and need to cast. As long as I can keep buying Missouri Bullet Company at todays pricing I'm not too motivated.

Forget the Hornady/Win expensive FMJ bullets and go cheap.  Run don't walk to this site and order some 230gr Zero  Brand FMJ bullets before they are all gone.

If they are out-of-stock get some of these.

+1 on this- great price, quality, and service!

E.T.A.- Also a plus one on 1911Smith's recommendation for the Lee Factory Crimp Die!

My 45 ACP single stage dies. I have added another seating die.

One has a round nose seater, the other a SWC seater. The 2 dies on the upper left that look the same.

Case gauge top, Lee FCD (factory crimp die) far right.

The reason to seat and crimp in separate dies is you are not reducing the bullet diameter while pushing the bullet into the case that last little bit.

You can get away with it with jacketed bullets, but not so much with cast bullets.

I also run every round through a case gauge. I use range brass, some cases just need more sizing.

The cast bullets at the top of pic are my home cast 200 gr SWC's. I load a lot of these.

RCBS dies. Normally in a green box. The RCBS gray box means the sizing die has a carbide insert.

With pistol carbide dies, no case lube is needed.

One of my few die sets that are not Hornady.

Hopefully 1911smith chimes in too, but I went to start loading up some leftover XTP's I have and the OAL is shorter than what Hornady recommends. I went only as short as I had to to make them feed correctly. I was at 1.21 when the book called for 1.23. Is it going to be ok running that short I just don't want a huge spike in pressure.

1/32nd rule is seating ogive no lower than 1/32nd of an inch above case mouth. If'n it were me I'd sink to 1.20.

Load safe and prosper my friend.

I'll try 1.2 for those HP's and on the Ball ammo 1.23 and see how she does. Thanks for the help!

For ball, depending on ogive and general bullet shape, you generally stick to the max feedable length. 1.23" sounds a little shorter than necessary.

I guess I'll just use the barrel as a measurement to check for seating depth to max then.
