So I just moved into my first home by myself.  Up until this point I have always had roommates and rented.  I have plenty of things that I would like to prtect, and since I do not know what the owner's before me had down to the place are there things that I should be on the lookout for?

As of right now, I am looking at putting in motion sensor lights at the front and rear of the house, as well as the garage (detached).  I looked in a few of the threads and did not see any recommendations, and when I looked other places, I haven't been able to find any company with particularly good reviews.  If a company doesn't really stand out, what features should I be looking for?  I was also thinking possibly getting a new front door with no glass and is a bit sturdier than the current one.

Thanks for any advice!!

I dont have much to add except be sure to change every lock in the house as soon as you take possession.

Make sure to change ALL the locks. I prefer double keyed deadbolts (needs a key on both sides), so they can't pop a window and reach through and unlock it, or, if they do get inside, they still can't open the doors to carry stuff out. If you have sliding glass doors, make sure to find some way to secure it. This is the best one I've found  Sliding door lock

You don't have to change the locks. You can just have a locksmith come in and rekey them for about 10 dollars a piece.

Make sure you reinforce the door jambs with longer screws to prevent the door for being kicked in.   Just look at the thread as the top of the list for pages of tips to protect your home.  Congratulations on the new house

The only issue I see with just having a locksmith change the locks is that they are probably crappy residential grade locks to begin with.

Nobody goes through a lock to break in., nobody.  They go through a window, break a door frame, or break the door itself. I have never seen anyone pick a lock to break in to a home.
