For the last year or so, I've been meaning to buy an inexpensive 870 to turn into an 18 inch "riot" shotgun, but I decided to wait until after duck season to do so. The stipulations were that it had to be a Wingmaster, be in rough shape, and that it had to be inexpensive. I stopped by the pawn shop that I bought my Nova from 2 years ago to see what they had on Saturday, and noticed an old beat up Wingmaster. I wound up buying it for $180 even. I took it home and completely stripped it, and the thing was filthy! The trigger group, the inside of the receiver, the bolt, the carrier, the barrel, and even the area between the stock and the receiver were all filthy. I spent about an hour and a half cleaning that up, then I went clay shooting with a friend. The gun's performance was excellent, and the action was very smooth. It has a 30" barrel with no removable chokes, and it make's my huge 28" Nova look little . There's actually very little rust on it, with the most being on the action bar which I'm going to replace. The bluing is wearing through to a brown color that's underneath. Now that I have it, I'm thinking about buying a good condition Wingmaster stock and forend and restoring back to it's original state (it won't be refinished, though), because the stock and forend that came with it are in poor shape as far as looks go.

Just spoke with Remington, and the rep. said that it was made in 1972.

I did one in just a little worse shape than that.  Sent it to Texas Armament in Blanket, TX for parkerizing, then put Hogue stock and fore end set on it.

I have seen your shotgun posted up before. I must say, I LOVE that thing to death. So KISS, its not even funny, but its just right. The only mod I would do, if it was me, would be a surefire fore-end.

That's not really my thing, but I sure like the way it looks! Did yours start out as an Express?

No, the only express I've bought I gave to my daughter, a youth model 20 gauge.  This one is a Wingmaster from about 1955.

The only thing I don't like is that 12 inch LOP stock, I would much prefer a full length stock.  But this one is for my wife and it fits her perfectly, so it stays.

All black is hot.

I'm thinking that I'll leave this one the way it is, and just buy some used furniture that's in better condition than what came with it. Seeing as how cheap this one was, I don't think I'll have any trouble finding another one to turn into a 18" gun. This particular shop had a few other 870's, so I guess that people really are getting rid of them now that duck season is over.

The Hogue stock set came with a pistol grip too, but the wife nixed that immediately.

I've got another old Wingmaster that is on duty in my office, looks a lot like the one a couple of posts up without the mag extension.

Whats that handgun-looking-thing under the 3 40mm rounds? a 26.5mm Flare gun maybe???

BTW, nice little set-up there. I'm loving the M60 and the M79

ETA: I just noticed the "Jungled" mags on the M16, nice, very retro. Me like!

Don't forget to check out Remington's Country Store for parts close out.  I bought my son a full stock for his youth 870 20 ga for $20.

You have the perfect foundation to build an USMC 870 Mark 1 like stevejness has there.

I’m working on a clone too, found the smooth (uncheckered) Wingmaster forend at Numerich and am waiting (patiently) on the barrel clamp/bayonet adaptor that Texas Brigade Armory is coming out with. Also working on a clone of the Air Force/Navy 870 and now thinking I need a 7188 or two (semi-auto clone of the full-auto Remington 1100).

Warhawk, you shotgun looks great! Did it come with a chrome plated bolt and lifter? If so, did Texas Armament Parkerize them too?

Thanks for your input. I had no idea that a reproduction adapter was being developed.

I looked through the TBA website and didn't see anything about the 870 barrel clamp. Do you have any further info about it? Link to another website? This is a product that a lot of us 870 owners have wanted for a long time.

Texas Brigade Armory is indeed developing a reproduction barrel clamp/bayonet adaptor. Got to talking with one of the guys at TBA and found out that it is something they're doing. My heart sang out when I learned of this as TBA is renowned for the highest quality work and authentic reproductions. I do not know of it being on their website or published anywhere, but have Taylor's permission to share the info, so call em and express your interest and enthusiasm.

That's good news. I won't build a clone, I like my police forend, but hate the factory Remington mag clamp. You never know when you might need a bayonet . I think there is a light mount for the AR15 that clips to the bayonet lug so could come in handy.
