I have been intrigued for a long time with all things FAL but have stuck to what I have known for many years. AR platforms, M1A, M1 Garand, 03a3 etc etc etc. I think you get the picture. A few days ago I was calling around looking for a G3, I like older weapons and figured that may be a good start for me. Well I ended up buying a weapon but it wasnt a G3. The rifle looked great and the price was well below what I would have expected to pay for it. So after a bit of research I decided to go for it! I bought what appears to be an early DSA( DS11xxx) Grayslake upper on an STG58 Lower( 58xxx ). Gorgeous weapon with what seems very little wear. I cannot wait to get to get her to the range and let some lead fly.

I have some questions for you GURUs though. The info I provided above is what I have learned over the past couple days researching this site and a few others. Things that I think I know. Type 1 upper, Type ? Lower, STG parts kit, all numbers match except hammer ( stamped FSE USA ), bolt and carrier have a number in an oval, trigger and sights do not that I can see. Barrel has 7.62MM, two stamps I cannot make out and a 61 ( and does have the same number as the lower ). So it looks like to me I have an early DSA upper with an older STG58 parts kit from?? And the rifle is a little bit of a Franken Fal but overall good quality. Am I close???

Here are some pics...

Congratulations, you have a nice looking FAL.  The Grayslake receiver is considered the pinnacle American made receiver - Forged.  They don't make them anymore.  It appears to me you have version 1 of the FSE fire control group.  They were replaced at one time at no costs by the manufacturer due to misfires/failures a number of years ago.  FSE M3 are the last version that I am aware that is/was on market.  I decided to replace with DSA hammer/trigger/Sear to keep it simple.

There are people on the FalFiles that are much more knowledgeable than me that can answer any questions you may have.  The reference sections are full of comments and pictures that give a good background that will enable you to ask knowledgeable questions.

Looks like a it might be a DSA assembled StG 58. DSA took pristine parts assembled them and part in the correct US made parts. DSA might be able to tell you if you ask.

The fire control might have been changed to the FSE. FSE was considered the best and smoothest fire control out there.

I bet that muzzle break in soldered on. The FAL hey day was in the middle of the AWB. The correct one is a Stoll type one

Holy cow did you luck out!  That DSA receiver is one of the best and the STG kits were some of the best FAL parts to hit the market imho.  They were usually in pristine shape and were very well made.

You can call DSA with the serial number and they can tell you if it is a complete rifle they built or if it was sold as a bare receiver.

Either way you have a fine example as your first FAL.  Congrats!

Does it appear that any of the serial numbers on the bolt, carrier, and left side of the lower have been milled/scrubbed off?  Is your locking lever vertical or horizontal? DSA removed the numbers on some of their earliest guns.
