II just bought an 870.

What is the appropriate choke for slugs, Improved or Mod?

What is the appropriate choke for buckshot?

Both will work. Try them both out.

Try the Rifled choke extension for slugs. Made a big difference for me if you're shooting slugs past 50 yards.

Improved-cyl. for slugs. Experiment to find out what works best, for your gun, with different buckshot. JMO.

I have Imp Cyl 18.5in barrel with ghost ring sights on my 870P, I get excellent groups with Remington Slugger slugs at 50 yds. I haven't experimented with Buckshot as much, but I have heard that Hornady TAP makes some nice tight groups; I have some myself, but haven't gotten around to testing it.
