Not reloading yet, but I'm in the process of reading as much as I can on the specifics of it. I have a pretty good idea of the components that I will start off with and I'm trying to make a list of everything prior to purchasing. One question regarding case trimmers.
To start off, I plan on using new (un-fired) brass for 9mm, .223/5.56, and .308). 6.8 SPC too, eventually. Will I have a need for a case trimmer using new brass? I know that I will check the length of even the new brass, but are they usually always on spec in terms of length? |

9mm won't need trimming. (it's always short and works fine as is) Some don't, but I size, trim and debur all new brass. New brass hasn't been loaded before, but may or may not be ready to load. I have been fooled by loose case necks before with new brass. That's a pain to dump out the powder, deprime and size the case, remove the case lube, and start over. Do some reading at the top of the page. Look in Tutorials for the 4 part loading 223. Lots of pics and explains the process well. Also some good reading here; |

That means it will also need to be trimmed, and deburring is a good idea whether it was trimmed or not. |

I use all new lapua .223 brass. I size, tumble the lube off, trim and use my case prep station flash hole deburing and uniforming tool. It gets the tumbling media out of the flash hole. Follow the same procedure after every firing except I add in decapping and primer pocket cleaning.
I trim after every firing but then again I use the giraud trimmer which makes it fast and easy. this trimmer does a better job than I can do with my forster trimmer with the three way cutter head. |
