I'm new with scopes (always used iron sights) and my new Savage .22 MKII came with a Bushnell scope on it.  Question is, I noticed that with the target fairly close (25yrds) and the scope at max optical zoom, I could not focus on the reticle lines, but rather just the target.  Is this normal?  Or is it a byproduct of cheap optics?  I had to turn down the zoom so as to finally focus on the reticle lines.  At 50 yards, I could zoom all the way and still focus on the reticle lines.  Thoughts?  School me please.

You don't mention what power your scope is or what setting it was on. Regardless of scope quality, there is such a thing as TOO close for a specific power to get a focus plane on. Nothing wrong with a Bushnell scope, IMO. I have one myself, among other brands. In fact, there's few brands I don't have a scope of............

Focus the reticle with the ocular end (closest to your eye).  If it has an adjustable objective (farthest away from you), that is for focusing the target, and adjusting for parallax (some scopes have this on the side).
