Been an Ar guy for 20 years and I'm getting my first M1A. I have heard rumors that they are hit or miss. i just purchased a M1A loaded from Buds Guns and I hope not to have any problems.

Any opinions or knowledge passed would be most appreciative.

I have the M1A Scout and love it. Old school, but works great. I have had no problems thus far. About 1000rds down the pipe. Springfield is known for their great customer service so no worries. Good luck with the new rifle.

I bought a NIB standard loaded a few weeks back so I haven't put many rounds through it but so far it has been perfect. I would guess most people don't go online to bitch about guns that work so it may seem like there are a lot of problems with them, but there are probably hundreds of happy customers for every one that has problems. Springfield is also supposed to have great customer service and your rifle has a lifetime guarantee so if there is a problem I'm sure they will fix it. Springfiled has a reputation and can't afford to lose customers in such a competitive market.

Thanks for the info. Any words of advice on break-in. What ammo are you using?

For break in I just clean the barrel every 10 rounds for the first 100 rounds or so. I have yet to see any accuracy difference in guns I have broke in per manufacturer instruction or other shooters advice.

I tried Federal 168 gold match ,  Federal 168 otm and American Eagle 150 FMJ, I will reload eventually but get factory ammo now for about the same or less than reloading costs. The Gold match shot very well in fact probably the best open sight group I have ever shot, with the AE 150 doing good enough for anything I will use the gun for.

I got a Springfield Standard model last November and have about 450rds through it with zero problems.  I'm surprised at the accuracy of even the standard model as I'm able to easily hit a bowling pin at 200 yds off the bench with the stock iron sights.

I have a Standard Loaded and it's been perfect. I have shot all commercial hunting 308 loads along with Malaysian surplus and it has chewed up all the rounds.

Have you noticed any difference between the 2?

I don't own one, but I do know a couple of people who do and none of them have had issues.

Honestly, if I wanted one, I'd buy one without hesitation. I have no doubts that, should you be unlucky enough to get one with issues, Springfield will take care of you. Their CS is pretty universally well regarded.

I bought  a Standard Synthetic back in 2008 & love it.

When I put it on layaway, I didn't notice that the rear aperture was missing. No problem, though. I got ahold of Springfield & a few days later I received ALL of the rear sight parts, not just the aperture.

It shoots great too. I haven't shot it for groups, but I can easily bust clays at 100 with my 147gr fmj pulled bullet handloads.

I've had my m1a SOCOM for almost 4 years and a part broke off of it at around 400 shots.

It was the front site. However, this is XS problem as they make the front tritium sights and not Springfield.

Glad I bought it. Although its accuracy is something to be desired but that can be fixed.

Wow, I to have been into AR's for the last 20 plus years also and order the M1A loaded last week from buds (MA9222) I haven't received it yet.  I was getting worried after reading some people complain about Springfields, hope I get a good one.  Good luck with your purchase.

yep I ordered the same one. Same back at you let me know how yours works out. I intend to keep mine as GI issued. Thought about going the scoped route but after watching hickok45's vids on you tube I 'm gonna keep mine iron sighted.

I'd try some Federal Gold Medal Match, or start handloading (which is what I do).

I bought my Scout from CTD last December and finally got the chance to put a few hundred rounds through it a couple weeks ago. I was shooting some Federal AE 7.62 168gr, Winchester 7.62, and some Tula .308. I would say the Federal shot the best, but the Win and Tula shot pretty good also.

Went bang and extracted every time. All of the CMI mags I bought worked great. I would hit up 44mag.com after you get your rifle and get some of the CMI mags; cheaper then the Springfield mags, and work fine.

I'm also sticking with the iron sights...my eyes are still good enough for at least 350 yds. I bought a new hand guard and sold the factory one with the scout mount. Then slapped a little krylon paint job on it.

My Son shooting a few rounds:

Springfield customer service is excellent, even if their receivers are cast and people claim they are out of spec.  I get abt 2 MOA with my M1A scout and various commercially loaded ammo.  I got my worst accuracy with Winchester 7.62 Q3130 and got my best accuracy (for economy ammo) with Remington PSP in the green and yellow box.  Your best bet is to buy a bunch of cheap commercial loadings and see which shoots best.  CMI mags are the only way to go, IMHO.

An LRB would be great (especially with the M25 receiver) but I think you can buy an M1A with confidence.

Using commercial .308 hunting ammo in the M1A well cause premature op-rod failure.

The M1A is designed to use 7.62 NATO ammo.   Commercial .308 ammo with bullet weights up to 175grs is generally safe to use.

Reliability on the M1A's is very good, the only problem I have had in thousands of round with two rifles is a single extractor failure.  Replaced with a GI part and GTG.

For more info on the M1A do some reading here.

I have owned three SAI rifles and never had an issue, except they are so much fun to shoot you better have a good supply of ammo!  Currently have a Supermatch.  It is fun to take to the range and never fails to garner the attention of other shooters.

Contradiction? Or are you saying using heavy hunting bullets will cause wear?

For what it's worth; On my new Springfield M1A Scout (Bought December 2011), it's stamped .308 on the barrel. The stamping is under the Op-Rod at the rear of the barrel...you have to pull the Op-Rod to see it.

I read that you shouldn't use higher weights than about 168 in the gun unless you get a Schuster nut due to excessive wear issues.  150's shouldn't have any problem (common hunting weight).

Wow is Buds slow at shipping.  Mine shipped on Thursday, it will be at the FFL on Monday.  Of course I'll be out of town on Monday.  Ordered 5 -15 round magazines from CMI directly, with 1 - 5 rds.  I believe it was 110. shipped.   Looking forward to getting it.

You might be a red-neck if you spend your state tax return on a M-1A!

It's not an issue of bullet weight, its an issue of pressure from different powders.  I have Hornady Light Magnum .308 that I would never consider feeding my M1A.  As a rule, you shouldn't go over 175 gr, but because its 175 or less, that doesn't mean you're safe because of what kind of powder it may have.  I think the safe options are:

1) Reload M1A friendly loads with fast burning powder

2) Buy actual 7.62 NATO

3) Get a gas plug and use good judgement.

The first M1A I ever shot was a rental, and they forbade people from shooting .milsurp in it.  So, you can be pretty sure that all that thing ever saw was commerical .308.  I think American Eagle .308 is a pretty safe bet if you're looking for something to shoot through your M1A that you can get at Walmart and the like.
