First of all.... DARN YOU!!! I don't need another optic to consider right now! (There, there, my little Aimpoint CS, the big bad firecop45acp didn't mean it, he's just a nasty old man...)

Now, as to what I *really* think...
1) Leupold has good glass & a good reputation, gtg in that respect.
2) It's a scope and not a RDS, that means eye relief and that means potential problems since the STG's length of pull isn't adjustable for differing clothing thickness so eye position (and hence proper eye relief) is going to change.
3) It's not a true 1x so unless you can pull off the ACOG BAC, speed of engagement at closer ranges is going to suffer (and CQB is the STG's bread-and-butter, IMHO).
4) Being a scope means eye position behind the optic is going to be more critical & difficult to maintain, especially when firing from unconventional positions.
5) I'm not sure that reticle is best for fast, close-in shooting (YMMV).
6) I haven't tried it so points 1-5 are open to interpretation & experimentation by others (nor did I sleep in a Holiday Inn last night...)
7) The Millett DMS-1 looks better and at half the price: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=186660, however, I haven't seen a magified optic yet that I really want to try on the STG (with the current singular exception of the Elcan Specter DR).
If you decide to try the Leupold then, please, let us know how it performs for you!

LOL, awesome response!  Just to add a little fuel to the fire:

Leupold =
Length: 9.3"
Weight: 9.5 oz.

Millett =
Length: 11.8"
Weight: 18 oz

Heard lots of raves about the millett but the main complaint on the STG was the length and weight... I'm not saying, I'm just saying.  And I'm afraid someone else is going to have to do this comparison, wife says no more optics swapping for a while.

ETA, if its for the range, moderate to mild use, might be a good option, but for getting knocked around and strenuous use, I'm still happy with my Aimpoint CS. (for now)

I had the Mk IV version of that scope on my Recce AR and loved it!  The eye relief on the Leupolds is very forgiving and you can almost put your chin on the back of the stock and still get a good sight picture.  It was good for my purposes as I had it on a patrol/perimeter/spotter rifle.  I ran it through schools and classes and it was almost perfect.  The issues were that the Leupold illum system isn't bright enough for a bright day/snow, and their rheostat doesn't have a positive stop and always seems to come on when in a case.  I went through a lot of batteries with this setup.  I replaced it with something with a bit more magnification, the MR/T 2.8-8x36 TMR Illum.

All that said, when I shoot in competitions, which are predominantly contact to 50 yards with occasional 100yd shots, I use an Aimpoint ML3.  I see the AUG as more of a CQB platform and find that a RDS is just fine.  You can still hit man-sized targets at 200yds if need be with it, and as most work is usually done within a yard/parking lot/room, magnification isn't an issue.  K.I.S.S.

I use the Leupold MKIV MR/T M2  (1.5-5x)  with the illuminated SPR reticle on my patrol / 3-gun rifle.  It is an awsome scope!!!   With a little practice, 1.5x is as fast as a RDS.  My department had night qualifications last night....and I smoked everyone on the rifle portion.  The 3lb. trigger on the JP rifle helps a lot !!!  I like the fact that I can clear a room with it....and also shoot 300 + yards with confidence.  I haven't tried it on my STG-556, but with the LaRue SPR-E mount that I have-eye relief should not be an issue.  I'll try to swap those out tomorrow and see how it fits on the STG-556.

Your SPR mount will probably be a bit high.  You need some medium rings, or two of the LT152 (RAS) mounts.

LOL! I know what you mean! Perhaps another potential candidate is the Leupold Prismatic: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=314070 Unfortunately last I heard they only have the circle-plex reticle and not the circle-dot (which would be great, IMHO). However, you also get the disavantages of a scope w/regards to eye relief & position. Maybe I'll see my "perfect optic" someday, sigh...

PS- Keep those optic suggestions coming!...

You see, now this is the kind of  "stirring of the pot" that should be going on in these forums... but im sure some fast car will chime in eventually

I am looking at the new Trijicon T24.  As soon as I read some more reviews and it has been out for a little while, I will probaly buy one.  The RDS makes alot of sense, but I am going to try and squeeze a little more out of the STG556.  When you can change from a 16" to 24" barrel in under a minute why not have a optic that can do it all?  Well almost.

The ELCAN Spector DR does look like something I would like to own.  After thinking about it there is no way I could spent two grand on optics with a one year warranty.  And then there is the mount.  It is a great idea, 1X or 4X not 1X-4X.  With that said if I had $2000 to blow, or find a great deal on a used one, I would buy one.
