Hornady FMJ's should loaded around 2.20" OAL. For starters the bullets is designed to be seated mid-cannelure. Data is recorded based on the OAL they used as well as their components. Change things and you're on your own.
You will not get better accuracy seating light weight FMJ longer than standard OAL's. |

The Hornady 55 FMJ has a blunt rounded nose unlike a lot of 55 FMJ's that have a long sharply pointed tip. Seating for the sharp tips is often recommended at 2.250". Seating to 2.260" doesn't leave the recommended one caliber inside the case neck. Should have .224" of the bullet touching the neck. At 2.260" you only have approx. .200" of the Horn. 55 FMJ bullet inside the neck. In my .223 chamber bolt
rifle 2.260" nor 2.250", the Horn. 55 FMJ will not chamber. In two popular brand AR's to touch the rifling you'd have to seat to 2.370"-2.390" so even at 2.260" you'd still have over .100" jump. I have nor have I read where others can tell any difference in accuracy trying to seat Horn. 55 FMJ's long in an AR. I'd seat them to a length at 2.200" out to 2.230" with 2.220" being ideal for me to apply a crimp into the cannelure. |
