Took the GP-100 out yesterday to do check out a few different loads, and had a small problem with the brass I was using.  This is Winchester bulk brass, bought new by me.  Second time fired.  First time was a mild load, 13.0 gr 2400, CCI-500, Hornady 158gr HP/XTP, seated to 1.58 OAL.  Second time it was fired was yesterday, all the same except the powder charge was 13.5gr 2400.  The Lyman manual I was using has a start load of 11.3gr, a max load of 14.9gr, so I'm pretty much in the middle.

Any input on why the brass would split like this?  Anyone had problems with Winchester bulk brass before?

I have been reloading ammo since the early 70's and one thing I can tell you I have had problems with every company's brass at some point (exept Norma). there is always a chance that a bad lot that will get out from time to time. had some hornaday recently that split necks on the 1st reload on 90% of the brass.

Glad to hear that, it means I didn't screw anything up on my end.

My concern is damaging the cylinder of the revolver. What's the chances of that? I'm going to pull down all the others I've loaded on that group of brass just to be on the safe side.

split cases might cause flamecutting on the chamber.   i'd scrap them, try to get something from winchester - send them examples of each. For example I have two rifles with pitted boltfaces due to some defective Reminton 91/2 primers in the 80's they would rupture on the radius portion of the primer cup. the hot gases blasted small craters in the bolt face steel ot two mausers and a winchester model 70.

how did you clean them after the first time? chemically

Cleaned them in a tumbler with a mix of corn cob and walnut, with a little Nu Finish car polish tossed in.  Same thing I use to clean all my brass.  I think I still have the bag at home that it came in, hopefully I can get a lot # and see if Winchester has had any other reported issues with that particular one.

What is the load you used?

My experience with Winchester brass "rifle brass" is I've found more defects with new brass than any other Mfg.

I have never had that problem with Win brass.

Only time I have seen splits like that is on americ brass that I picked up at the range.

Sounds like a bad lot to me.

I'll agree with others –– bad lot.  Hell I just loaded up 200 .357 mag with new Win brass but those brass I purchased back in the late 90's.

Past experience––-Winchester brass has seemed to be a bit harder than others––that said a friend, a few years ago bought several boxes of 243 Remington loaded ammo for a prairie dog trip––every neck split upon the first firing––hence no more loaded Remington ammo!! Switched to Winchester brass and has no issue with it!! Bad lot of brass, maybe missed the annealing cycle––-check Winchester!!

I would also have the chambers checked on your Ruger to make sure they are not oversize!!

As far as the oversize chambers, I don't think that's an issue. I've fired several hundred out of the gun with no issues before this. I'm counting it up to a bad lot. I'm also going to try to see if I still have the bag with the lot #, and let Winchester know. Thanks for all the replies!

+1 on having the chambers check just for good measure.   I purchased a box of factory Win. X39 FMJ ammo several years ago it shot fine second time around with what I knew to be a safe load about half the shoulders of the cases had hairline cracks with burn marks around them it's the first and only time I've ever experienced that with any what I would call new brass.

I've had a few cases split like those you posted but it took many firing of full house 357 loads to accomplish that out of my Ruger BH 357.
