Assuming you are using a helmet mounted PVS14 with an IR laser, do you run:
Red dot only or Red dot and magnification? I have been running an TA11J-G ACOG with an offset T2 on a Larue LT-724 mount. I can sort of aim passively with this setup. Although, I do use the IR laser most of the time. The ACOG has been useful for looking into areas that are lit up if I flip up my NODs. The problem: 1. Passive aiming is not great. I am sure a standard mount would be better than offset. 2. It makes the gun heavier. I am not sure the juice is worth the squeeze on having the ACOG on board. What do you do or think? P.S. Most of my training involves square range activity and hunting because I don't shoot people for a living. |

Any reason your not using an RMR on top of the ACOG?

The TA11 puts the RMR pretty close to your face. I can't use it with my PVS14. The RMR would smack right into the NOD.

Ive used EXPS 3 and T2 on my night gun. I enjoy using the T2 much more and shoot passively as much as I can vs using an IR laser.

I went cheap and simple since I'm only LARPing around our property. A little Sig MSR on a Unity mount is tall enough for me to aim passively with a helmet mounted PVS-14. I have a LAM that I could use but I lent it to a buddy about a year ago. I just didn't really use it.
I have successfully carried out ambushes against a groundhog incursion on our property on two occasions. |

Much prefer the forward RDS positioning of the TA02 and TA110 Or for SBRs, RDSs only or with a magnifier Obviously we are getting into personal preferences so there will be a multitude of different opinions on it. I've not had good luck getting offset dots (even at 1.93 height) to work as well for passive aiming as a top mounted dots. |

Aimpoint or Eotech on a Unity riser are extremely intuitive. Passive NV feels just like daylight shooting.

A 12:00 mounted RDS on top of a LPVO, MPVO, ELCAN, TA02 is going to be your best for passive aiming. Usually with a higher mounted RDS a 100 yard zero will give you a overall flatter trajectory with hold overs out to distance, but just be aware of your mechanical offset with distances less then 25M. If light weigh is a concern then a RDS with a QD magnifier is your best bet, for durability it's hard to beat a TA02/RDS or if you want an optic that has a backup to a backup an ELCAN 1-4/RDS gives you the ability to have an instant RDS to 4X and should your RDS go down you can quickly switch between 1-4X with a nuclear bright dot all with the ability to passively aim through your ELCAN if needed although it will not be sexy/quick by any means.

I wouldnt run magnification on a red dot when using NV. If I need magnification I'd go with a dedicated nv/thermal scope.
Eotech for me, it's the gold standard passive NV optic imo. |

[#16]
I agree the Eotech is the gold standard but for a bit of a hipster choice the Sig 8t is absolutely phenomenal under nods. So good that I bought one about 5 minutes ago after spending time behind a buddies last week.
The glass is just fantastic. Every bit as crisp and functional as an Eotech. I'm not a Sig fan but the 8T is badass. |

Second choice for passive night aiming is a T2 which is what I keep on the rifle. I run mine with no magnification, but ideally you’ll want your daylight setup to mirror the nighttime setup. The more you can streamline the transition the better. My daylight head/hand position mirror my nighttime positions exactly. Sounds like you run the ACOG all the time. My experience using an ACOG passively with night vision, was an exercise in patience and frustration. Personally I would insist on a red dot/magnifier combo, mounted in mounts high enough for legit night use. As long as that requirement is met, the Eotech/Aimpoint argument is moot. If you absolutely love the ACOG, run it, but piggy backing a red dot would be mandatory for me. |

EXPS, however I’ve always been faster at target acquisition with a full power peq-15 hooked up to a pressure switch. I can think of so many scenarios at night where I may not be able to get the rifle up into position for passive aiming through an optic quick enough or not at all.

Essentially setting it up for short eye relief with the stock in a short position, with the stock extended back when using NVGs. I know of at least one person doing that but they haven't posted about it in a while. Their experiments seemed to be going well. Granted adding 3oz to the Elcan's already beefy 21 or whatever ounces isn't going to help the argument. |

View Quote While passively aiming through an Elcan is possible on 1X and 4X the eye box is also a big limiting factor. A 12:00 mounted RMR for passive is awesome and I don't have any problems with my 14 or binos contacting the Elcan. What I like about the piggyback Elcan/RMR is you can your RMR on NV mode, your Elcan on a daylight setting and having your MFAL in IR/Vis/White light for a total of 4 aiming solution for every conceivable situations you may encounter. |

Yeah, people talk about the ELCAN 1-4 at low 20's oz as being heavy, but you can't really find an equal 1-4 illuminated LPVO plus mount that is lighter unless maybe using Leupold Mark 4HD with a Aero ultralight mount. |

View Quote So, I have an NX8 with an Acro P2 in/on a Reptilia 1.70 AUS. Great mount without wierd strength compromises. The combo gives me a mil grid reticle, daylight bright, true unity and up to 8x, with all the options in between. The p2 provides passive nv and head up aiming capabilities in a separately powered unit. All of this cost me 27oz, and monetarily similar to a discounted blow-out priced legacy 1-4 elcan with Arms mount and bdc 1/4x reticle. Outside of very niche applications, the elcan is very heavy for what it offers. |

As it is, you either use it like a magnified red dot, or have to run it through strelok or something and the wind holds are trash. |
