Hello, I am newly registered here, but have been a long time browsing visitor. I am in the market for a thermal monocular, and need some educated advice.
I have done a ton of research and know pretty much what units fall into my budget. Here is what I need and what I am willing to spend: $3500 total including a rhino mount of some kind Helmet mounted option (hence the rhino mount ^^) Has a video out port (to record on an external mdvr) Preferably 60Hz refresh rate ( from my understanding it is better with fast ground trekking movements compared to the 30Hz rate) In most cases my maximum viewing distance would be about 100 yards. So I don't feel I need a Scope per say This unit will be used primarily for tactical reenactments/ training purposes. Clearing buildings and their outside perimeters I am not ex military or law enforcement, just someone who appreciates the tactical procedures and reenactments/military simulations As much as I like the IR Defense patrol 250 unit, I don't currently have the budget for it I've been looking at the Armasight Prometheus units, which fall closely to what I want. I'm just unsure of video quality with the Prometheus ( not much on YouTube to gather an opinion) I have probably been on every single night vision webpage and am now overwhelmed. Hopefully some insight can lead me to a purchase of what I am looking for Thanks Johnny |

It might just be me, but I feel the learning curve is higher with thermal. A lot more for your brain to interpret than night vision.
Night vision your going to have a more normal view for your brain to process. It may sound silly now, but when you work with both you'll get what I mean. Thermal is great for DETECTION, i.e, there is a heat source, not so great for identification of threats, most especially in models with lower resolution. Something like an IR Patrol M300 with higher resolution would be your best bet IMO. |

Thermal has still quite a narrow FOV, lowish refresh rates, image lag, quite poor ability to pick up fine details, and then the fact it is far from your regular vision like the previous poster said.
NV has traditionally a low FOV too, 40 degrees, but it's just enough to navigate and get things done, and has none of the bad sides of thermal above. With supplemental IR light you can enter blacked out houses just fine. If your enemy has NV too you are in quite the trouble clearing a building unless you have other means to help you. |
| I appreciate all the replies and insight!! Detection (heat thermal) is what I'm after. The need for PID is inot really necessary for my application. With all that being said, Any recommendations then NV wise with a video recording option. I have read mixed reviews about the GoPro PVS-14 attachment. Was hoping for something that like the IR Defense thermals, with the video out capabilities. |
