The folks from PTR were at the range today (great weather here in CT) and I got to try out the new PTR 32. Basically it's an HK91 chambered in 7.62x39.  Very comfy to shoot, very mild recoil without any torque effect or odd feel. The rifle's a bit heavier than most AR's but when compared to other semi autos in this category it's similar and has a very nice feel to it.

I only fired ten rounds at 50 yards and the unit wasn't really sighted in so I can't comment on accuracy but they said they'd been having very good results. The sights were just regular irons and set for much longer range so I can't comment on how well they work, but they were typical HK style irons. The trigger was smooth but a bit longer pull than I like. For what amounts to a combat rifle though, it was excellent.

I was impressed. I'm going to have to consider one in the future. The only thing I didn't like was that the standard model has no easy way to mount a red dot, you have to get the version with a welded rail on the receiver. In today's world it seems odd to not have this be standard. On the other hand, cost considerations mean they aren't going to retool to build the rail into the receiver, so making it optional doesn't mean it won't be the most commonly selected version.

Thanks to PTR for letting me try out the new version.

PTR Inc makes cool guns.

If they'd make one without the 20lb barrel I'd be all over it.

Yep, needs a lightweight barrel before I'd consider it.

I've always wanted them to come out with a standard G3 profile barrel. I don't know why they won't do it. For the lighter caliber they definately need a lighter gun and it would help to make it a 32K with a shorter barrel.

You do understand the post above yours is asking that the barrel be turned down to the profile of the miltary G3, right? I'm all for being able to buy a heavy barrel as an option, but the standard should be no heavier than it's military parent. (especially for the lower powered 7.62x39 vs 7.62x51)

The right tool wouldn't be a heavy target barrel on a blaster like this. But we know why they do it; we just don't like it.

What mags does  it take?

It takes standard AK-47 magazines. It is an interesting weapon, and another caliber option if you have an HK sear.
