Hey everyone.  I purchased a PTR-91C last year.  I have a couple question for you H&K guys out there as this is a clone.  I bought a bunch of that Winchester NATO 7.62 x 51mm white box ammo.  Big mistake.  My gun cloged and jammed up after about 20 rds.  Took a hell of a time to cleanup too really dirty.

Anyway, question one.  This gun is made for .308 Win right? Not the 7.62 X 51mm NATO?  I know they are close but not the same.  Should I purely use .308 or can I get away with certain kinds of NATO?  Second, do you recommend only using .308 that is steel cased?  As this gun makes those dimples all over the case and it is sort of useless to use to reload after that?

Next, should I lube up the charging handle piston area or leave that dry?  Will the oil simply collect residue and cause grinding in that area, or lightly oil it?

Final question.  I don't know why I bought the 91C version, I would like to put on an after market flash hider/compensator.  I believe the comp on mine is welded on.  Is the only way to change this to send it to the factory to have altered or use a competent gun smith to remove it and put threads on? Or is this just a waste of money and be happy with what I got?

Thanks for all who respond

You shouldn't shoot commercial .308 in that weapon.

I'd only shoot 7.62x51 surplus, not WWB.

You should be able to reuse the brass for reloading. Fluting doesn't cause the damage that most people think (not to good military brass).

if you get the port buffer it will help with the dents on the brass. i have heard it may scratch the reciever though.  i think the manual says to stay away from the white box, indian and south african ammo.  the reciever is stamped .308 so i dont see why you couldnt use .308 ammo.

FWIW, I emailed JLD a couple of years ago, (when they still made the PTR), and was told the PTR was ok at .308 pressure, not just 7.62 x 51.

Who makes them now? I thought they were still made in the same place as before.

I understand this but it is still the same people and place very little changed. The other poster made it sound like they stopped and someone else made them.

Your PTR will/should shoot either, however, Winchester is not a good ammo (in the FMJ .308).  It is not recommended from what I've read.  This is from PTR Inc.:

PTR 91 Inc recommends the following surplus ammo for use in the PTR 91 rifle:
Argentine, Australian, British, Portuguese, Spanish, Lithuanian

The following surplus ammo "has caused malfunctions" in the PTR 91:
South African, Austrian, Indian, Cavim, Winchester White Box 7.62 NATO

I shoot both steel cased Barnaul .308 and SA 7.62x51 in mine and it runs like a raped ape.

My advice is to get a brush and scrub your chamber flutes.  Clean it when you shoot it and it should be good.  If not, send it to PTR and they will make it right.

I put a lot of Silver Bear and Brown Bear through my CETME...  I had one broken case stick in the chamber, but other than that, no problems at all.

(It's cheap enough that it didn't bother me too much )

I've put Winchester (but NOT white box) through mine.  Barnaul, South African, Portugese, Chilean, Hirtenberger, & Norinco, too - not a burp or hiccup yet! http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc305/The_War_Wagon/PTR-right1.jpg
