Hey guys. Does anyone know anything about  PTZ cameras? My system allows for one of these to be added. I would like to use one but I wouldn't know where to start. Thanks.

What  system do you have, analog or IP ?  What price range are you looking for?  is it for a indoor or outdoor location?

It is an IP system. I'm pretty flexible on price. It needs to have a good zoom. It will be outside

What software are you using now?  Indoor or outdoor?  Meg pixel requirement?  Any need for long range IR's  Budget?

In my opinion  PTZ are only really good for real time viewing.  An officer / guard can scope out quire a large area in sort order with one.  As far as looking at recordings after the fact it is useless.  If it is set to pan then you can not search motion in zones and it is damn near impossible to scan quickly.  Also they never seem to be looking where you need them too when something occurs.  If you have a pretty traffic free location I guess you can try a tracking software

to start ...  Look at the Vivotek PTZ's The have been the best bang for the buck for me and If you dont have a NVR that streams then you can do it directly from the camera and their Iphone app is free.

If it is a 7000 series camera it is going to be Mpeg4
if it is a 8000 series camera then it is going to be H.264

Vivotek would be a good place to start looking.
