Hey guys! I've got a set of PVS-5's from another member in a trade. I'd like to convert into a set of rail mountable monoculars. Good idea or just sell tubes, frame, other parts, and then buy a PVS-14?

I'm all about DIY but want to know if it's worth. Anyone that done the conversion please feel free to chime in.

My last MX-9916 tube I have mounted on a rail in a mono lasted exactly two 5.56mm shots before it quit.
I don't think anyone can judge durability of these things and their ability to withstand recoil.

As I stated in another thread....ABNightvision was working on a housing that would work for what you are wanting to do.

I think the tube should handle recoil just fine but you have age as a factor. These tubes are old and with time we all become more fragile. I love projects like this but I also have to be realistic. I would sell the parts but I also don't need any Gen 2 gear. Maybe keep one tube to play with and sell the other to offset costs.

I still would keep it to a capable spotter and nix the weapon mount idea. Very well may hold up fine but age does play a factor. Parts and materials break down over time.

Ed Wilcox had a housing for just what you want to do. He may still have some floating about but it is a long shot. Call him or email to find out. I see them rarely at auction as well.
