Well, pine straw isn't just for guns. I got sick of the bright green 4" vent tube sticking out of my State mandated $20k raised septic system so I broke out the Krylon again. It blends in well with the trees when looking at it all the way back from the house.

I'm gonna give this a shot after my optic comes in. I'm thinking Krylon, an OD green base, pine straw or other foliage, and tan/khaki and brown over it. Most of the ones I see here have the lighter color for the base; anyone think going darker OD will be a problem? The thinking behind it is that the OD will end up being the least prominent color after the others go on, so it should go pretty well in Texas - lotta tan and brown with a bit of green.
Thoughts? |

Here's an update of my pinestraw style SPR and its west Texas red dirt and scrub scheme. This was a base of Aervoe Earth Yellow and Sand, with pine needles covered all over the tacky paint, then a top coat of Earth Brown. I finished it off with Earth Red through a mesh bag to fill in some red to match west Texas red dirt:

Around 4:30 from the dark thick fencepost near the center of the pic. It's along the dropoff/embankment, you'll need to zoom in a bit and try to spot its shadow. |

I did another one. It turned out darker than my last one. I guess I shouldn't have rushed and tried to do it on a windy day. Anyway, it still works.
It's an LMT lower with their 2-stage trigger, Daniel Defense M4 barrel shortened so the pinned and welded YHM Phantom brings the OAL to 16-1/4", YHM Customizable Specter Length Forend, YHM front and rear BUIS, duckbill grip, Magpul stubby VFG with the MIAD mount used by drilling and tapping the forend so no extra rails ricks out past the grip, Ace ARFX stock and a TA33R-8 ACOG. 
And here's the first AR I did that's posted in this thread somewhere. Looking at them both the colors on this one contrast a little more. I might do a little work and lighten the latest one up a little. Or I might just say "screw it" since the coyotes aren't going to know the difference. You can't tell from this pic but the Krylon is getting pretty beat up, but that's going to happen with use. It's not like we are baking on Cerakote. Speaking of Cerakote, I bought a Mossy 500 off the bargain rack at a gunshop years ago. Since I have a few safes full of shotguns I chopped it down to 18-1/4", drilled and tapped it for a big brass bead and installed a Hogue pistol grip and forend. I got it with almost no finish left so I had my gunsmith friend beadblast it and Cerakote it khaki. I'm going to camo it with Krylon over that. Anyway, back to the first AR I did. Which one do you guys think came out better?

Took a run at painting my carbine this weekend. It started with some OD Green Magpul furniture, so I used Rustoleum OD Green as a base:
Covered it with some dried vegetation I gathered: 
After application of khaki and brown (Rustoleum again): 
It looked too brown for me, and not enough of the green came through. I think I made the mistake of "painting" it too much with the khaki, as opposed to just hitting it with short bursts. Too much spray got under/around the vegetation. So for the other side I went heavier with the vegetation: 
Liked that better, so I flipped it back over and tried cleaning up the first side. Ended up like this: 
Seeing it in person, there isn't as much difference between the two sides as it seems. I'm pretty happy with it, I'm going to let it sit for a few days and take another look at it before I decide if I want to do anything else with it. I think it's just going to stay as-is, though. I really don't much care how it looks, this was more of just a for-fun thing to see how it'd turn out. |

had to use flash to get a picture tonight. I will try to get something better down the road. I did a quick rattle on it before. I should have cleaned the old paint off better but bah what ever. This is a little throw around 10.5 sb pistol because Iowa doesn't let us have cool kid guns. Interested to see how well the paint holds up on the stock. I put it throw the sand blaster to rough it up a bit then just went to town on it. |

The green on the noveske looked like baby shit for the root pass and that made me nervous so I just cracked another beer and kept going. turned out ok. I run over them with clear coat that is matte after they broom bristles are off looks like it is holding them together ok. |

The green on the noveske looked like baby shit for the root pass and that made me nervous so I just cracked another beer and kept going. turned out ok. I run over them with clear coat that is matte after they broom bristles are off looks like it is holding them together ok. Is that a 13.7" with the 249F or is it 14.5"? 13.7 cool little gun. Would you do it again? Or would you stick with 14.5 and throw a comp/brake on it in future builds? I've been thinking about doing the 13.7 + 249F I would. My great state of Iowa is still dragging its feet on suppressors which as made it so that I have had no need for mounts. Most of my rifles are set up with aac breaks waiting for another 762 sdn. If I was in a no ban state I would stick with 14.5 and an AAC but that is great for non suppressed shooting under night vision. I shoot with borrowed clip ons or my anvis 9 goggles at night and with the 249 there is almost no visible flash. It is the finest device for suppression that I have seen. I hate comps and breaks. I have owned most of them from the little lantacs to seekins breaks and find them to be completely pointless. I hate adding lots of noise to muscle down a muzzle that has almost no rise. I am not a serious competitive shooter even though I shoot in some three gun and stuff I don't need that small of an advantage when it has so many real world negatives like additional audio report and a huge signature for dirt pick up when fired close to basically anything. |
