I read in the above post that it is fine for a non-licensed person to send a gun directly (and across state lines) to a FFL for a sale to another non-licensed person. Then why can I not find one around me who will accept a gun from a non-licensed seller without it going through a FFL at his end? Is there some sort of liability? One dealer even told me "the ATF could come in here and shut us down for that".

Thanks

Because A - Your dealer is misinformed

or more likely

B - He is tired of trying to accept shipments from individuals who do not include the proper documentation, i.e., copy of drivers license, Invoice of sale.  Without the DL or some other reasonable proof of the entity you received the firearm from you cannot enter it into your bound book.  Then the firearm would need to be returned if possible and if not he cannot transfer it to anyone or enter it correctly into his books.

or

Option C the dealer doesn't like you

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm having a real hard time finding one near me that either a) is informed b) has not been burned or c) or realizes what a hell of a guy I am.

It is definately harder.  We are the only one around here in the area that dosent require they come from a dealer but have been considering changing that policy and going FFL only.  Have had guns come in with no DL copy like requested to the point of coming in with their Screen name as the sender and a made up address.   Just getting to be too much of a hassle to deal with that an FFL only policy is looking tempting.  We said before we wouldnt do it but the sellers are just messing it up for everyone else.  Also we have had problems with individuals imporperly packing a gun(oversized box no padding), not insuring it to save money then when it comes in damaged and the buyer gets mad they say thats not how we shipped it out(showing their pre packing pics) and your dealer must have damaged it.

Where are you located at, that might help find an FFL near you.

A somewhat related followup question:

Can you ship a handgun to yourself in another state?

We have a vacation home in AZ.  I would like to ship a pistol from IL to AZ.

I believe it's legal with long guns.  Unsure about  handguns.

Thanks,
