I tried again today to shoot my new  Polytech M14S at the nearby National Forest shooting range. It was closed last weekend for construction. Well......when I got there today there was a big "CLOSED" sign where the benches are. There also was quite a few Cadets there shooting bolt action rifles. Boy was I pissed and I made a rather blunt statement. All a sudden a rather nice gentlemen in his BDUs said I could shoot at the far side of the range but all the benches were taken. I said fine and was relieved because I had driven 50+ miles to get there.

I only had 40 rounds of South African 7.62 X 51 ammo and two mags. One mag came with the rifle and one was a T-57 from Midway. My Poly has a used fiberglass USGI stock on it and looks like it has been through two wars. I was only able to shoot the rifle standing but I was extremely happy with its accuracy. Recoil was actually less than a 7.62 X 39 AK I use to own. The rifle fired great with no problems. The only incident was when I pulled the handle back to chamber a new round the handle popped out of the receiver. I believe I pulled it to the side while pulling it back. There was nothing unusual about the spent cases. I have been told to look at them to see if the rifle might have a headspace problem. All in all I am a happy camper.........and shooter too.........

Dunno how much the OP paid, but I almost snagged one (with wood stock) and a couple mags about 5 years ago for $800.  Seller went silent on email communications, and the deal fell through, sadly enough...

You'll be angry when I tell you that I picked up mine wholesale back in '93 while I had the chance. I think I paid about $369 plus shipping.

I picked up a NIB side stamped Poly two years ago ... $400 cash.
A sealed 800 round can of Hert and 6 mags were included.

Yeah, but we're talking about a poly m1a but I will give you $450 for that critter you got now. I'll even give you what you paid for the ammo.

And I'm talking cash money.

Mine is heel stamped and identical to LARRYG's above...except that mine has an actual M1907 shooting sling and only cost me $648 a few months ago.

Nice rifle!  About the op rod coming out, it's possible that you just pulled it slightly to the side, but to be on the safe side, I would check to make sure that the operating rod guide is firmly mounted to the barrel.  I got a Fed Ord M14SA about a year and a half ago, and the op rod guide was loose (rotated slightly on barrel, affecting how it aligned with the gas piston).  I bet yours is ok, but it might not hurt to check, I put a new one on and things tightened right up.
