I'm pretty new to the M1A/M14 field. I see some Polytech rifles and some SA standard rifles for sale in the forum classifieds. Are the Polytech rifles good quality in comparison to the SA standard type rifles? A friend had a 3 digit serial no. Polytech and claimed it would outshoot a buddys NM Springfield Armory hands down. Not trying to just buy cheap, but have a limited budget to work with. Thanks Greg Urwiller

Good discussion thread on Chinese M14 rifles here: www.m-14forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=16277

Allright, now that I've read the links I'm totally confused! It sounds like the Chinese M14 have some problems. May have that is. Sounds like a hit or miss proposition. Even tho a lot of owners are satisfied, it sounds like most of the bolts stand a good chance of being suspect at best. That said tho, how does a Standard Springfield Armory then, compare. Will I have to do any tweeking to a SA or can I figure on it being good to go? It doesn't sound like (from what I've read here) these are a good solid rifle sometimes either. Being new to the field, I don't understand why everyone says you need new USGI parts on the rifle all the time either. Thanks Greg Urwiller

My $0.02, the best semi-auto M14 deal going is a previously owned standard model Springfield Armory, Inc. M1A.  The previous owner will have already test fired it and in a lot of cases left it in the safe.

And if you're REALLY lucky, he hasn't bothered to check out M1A prices in a few years and thinks he's takin' you to the cleaners asking $50 more than he paid for it back during the Reagan administration.

From what I've read in other threads, SA doesn't have that good of reputation. From my understanding thats because their parts aren't all to military specs. Is this correct? Do USGI military specs set the standard to compare to then? And thats why everyone replaces parts with USGI parts? Thanks for all your help! Greg Urwiller

Awww what the hell, i was newb once....

SA and Fulton receivers are cast, not forged.  Many say cast in inherently inferiour. (the quality of the cast  will factor in.. you could get a high quality cast part)

Lrbarms makes forged receivers.  usgi m-14 are forged receivers.

usgi specs are more than dimentions, they are material type/quality, hardness, and mfg proecess... yeah, that.
