Just got a Polytech M14/S on a trade and was wondering what it's worth. It is in excellent condition. It is an early import 1988 or so and is heel marked. It has had the receiver heat treated and a USGI (HRA) bolt installed by Smith Enterprise. Other USGI parts include HRA Op Rod, HRA trigger group, bayonet lug and stock w/ DOD and P markings. Any idea what it's worth?

Depends..........has the bolt been changed out?  Polytechs were bad about having soft steel and lose headspacing after a few hundred rounds.  Switching to a TRW or GI bolt solves that problems and makes them worth more.

No GI or TRW bolt.........$500-$600 range.

With a bolt change $700-$800 range

That's what I've observed at the gun shows around here.

I don't have anything in writing to prove the work done by Smith but the guy I got it from is a stand up guy. I am going to call SEI tomorrow and see if they keep any records of their work. Here are a few pics: http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b314/operator1/Polytech-M14/

I see that same type rifle selling for around $1150 give or take.  Heel marked pollys are more rare and Poly people will pay more for the usually.  The bolt conversion and USGI parts bring up the value.  I know some people get polys for less than that and thats great but I also bet it could sell for what I said if you let it ride.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAAA!!!!!

A Smith upgraded Poly is worth more than your standard SA gun.  With a USGI bolt and the heat treatment, you have a FORGED receiver M1a (count how many manufacturers make a forged reciever) and a chrome lined barrel AND a USGI bolt.

Figure $1000.  A Poly without any mods sells for $700-800 on the EE within a week.

Here's a pic of my completely redone Polytech.  It has a Barnett SS Match barrel, NM trigger group and sights, globe front sight with 10 inserts, Smith muzzle brake and a USGI bolt conversion with heat/cryo treatment.  OH yeah, I refinished the stock as well.  Apparently the wood on these guns can be pretty nice.

I paid $648 tax and all for my poly. It's got a couple USGI parts that I know of(flash hider and stock).

I paid $400.00 for my 1st. side stamped Poly a little over a year ago. All original with a total of 60 rounds fired.

From what I can tell, todays average selling price for a nice ChiCom is about $825.00

Damn good deal!  But in my opinion, the parts that MATTER being USGI don't include the ones you got.  But you did get a GREAT deal.

PS. With your USGI stock, make sure the pin holding you spring guide in place is either really tight or you use nail polish or some other means to retain it.  That pin will drift in a USGI stock, since the dimensions are different than the Chicom stock.  Ask me how I know?

Thanks for the info. I looked it over again today and it's a heel stamped receiver. Serial # begins with 006 or 06, can't remember offhand. I'll give it a much more thorough inspection once I get it out of layaway.
