Just thinking outloud here. How about a new stainless Remington 7400 with an 870 pistol grip stock and synthetic forearm. Eagle 10 round mags. Comes in 30-06 or 270 but could be rebarreled to 308. Stainless solves the problem of soft aluminum galling on current 7400 receivers. How well would this work or am I inhalling too much GunScrubber? |

Ckeck out the new DPMS AR .308 Priced hundreds less than an AR10. www.shooterstore.com/acb/showdetl.cfm?&DID=90&Product_ID=5288&CATID=493 |

$375 for a complete Eagle Arms AR10 lower from Quantico Arms. $650 for a complete Armalite AR10c upper from Quantico Arms. Total $1,025 for an AR10. 20rd mags NIW $65. 20rd mags converted $55 20rd mags conversion kit $35 + $14 Tapco M14 shells = $49 It's the mags that kill you. I have 5 - 20 rounders. Ed |
AlsCustom is selling the DPMS .308 to ARFCOM members for $989.
They take either the DPMS 10rd mags or KAC SR25 20rd mags. |
The old Armalite AR10 waffle mags work in the Stoner SR25. I have one of these. I will post pictures later. I emailed Paul at DPMS to see if these would work also. I'll keep you posted. |

I second the idea about an FAL or a CETME. Of course an M1 garand is nice too. Does it have to be a .308? There are many surplus semi-auto in the same power range for half the price and less. I just picked up a CETME and with only one day at the range I am figuring on 1.5" groups @100 yds using handloads. |

Please, don't miss the point. Tangochaser is really on to something here. Think about it, not all of us can spend the money required to get into an AR10, M1A, or DSA FAL. The less expensive alternative is the kit FAL and CETME. If you build an FAL you can spend a lot less but what kind of parts are you using. The CETME seems to be gaining acceptance but it has issues of its own. So with the 7400 you get a NIB rifle that is probably as accurate as the three high dollar rifles and under warranty of a major manufacturer. Sounds like a no brainer to me. Of course, you have to solve the magazine question. But I am telling you that there are a LOT of cheap SOB's just like me who would love something like that. Plus, if you leave the stock as is you remove the whole AW features issue. No pistol grip, no bayonet lug. Just a normal huntin' rifle with a whole lot of ammo on board. What's not to love?

Okay I just saw the picture tangochaser made of what this gun could look like with the pistol grip stock... screw all that evil features crap. I want the pistol grip...that's cool!

Well, this is a SR-25.... world.guns.ru/sniper/sn13-e.htm![]() This is an SR-25 and that is its mag.... So what is so wrong about SR-25 mags???!!!! Actually, it doesn't look that bad. With the 10rnd mags and 30-06 it would be a nice long range rifle. |
| Another rifle that you might consider for a "poor man's 308" is the Sagia AK style 308's that are on the market now. They come with 8 round mags (that are EASILY converted to 10 round) and they are built on the AK style frame. I have the wood stocked rifle, looks like a shotgun style stock. Mine was $279 from CDNN about a year ago, they are now $249 for the same rifle. It has a 22 inch barrel, and is really reliable. I got mine, and purchased about 5 extra mags. They also make it with a 16 or 18 inch barrel and the regular AK style pistol grip stock. Not sure how much that one is. You can download CDNN's catalog, and they are in it. |

I got the picuture with the 870 pistol grip stock from a post last year some time. The guy said it required some minor sanding to get a tight fit. The new 7400s can be had with synthetic forends. The stock bolt and washer are the same for an 870 and 7400, at least they are the same part number in the Gun Parts Corporation catalog. I came up with the idea a few years ago but someone else beat me to a completed project. There are metal 10 round mags avaiable and the one pictured is an Eagle brand. CDNN selss these for $9.99 a piece. I have been told the 30-06 and 308 mags are the same mag. The 308 mag has a spacer to take up the additional area not used. Can anyone verify if the 308 and 30-06 are built on the same action? Might even be possible to modify either 20 round M14, FAL, AR10 mags to fit or modify the receiver. I hadn't looked at Fals or CEMTEs only because I don't know anything about them or how to build one and 7400 can be found everywhere used for even less money. Heck, you can even order one from Wal-mart. Not that I recommend it. |
I'm *pretty* sure the .308 is a different mag than the .30-06. They make a 'long action' mag for the .30-06/.270 rifles & a 'short' mag for the .308/.243 rifles. I have thought about doing this exact thing but starting with a 7600 pump (same mags) so as too be able to use a 870 folding stock. Plus from what I understand the Remington pump doesn't have the 'issues' the auto does. |

I am going to put this together when I get back from Germany next year. Can't do anything now because of the new Nazi gun laws in Germany. I will get the stock and some mags and set them in the corner for now. I have been told the 7400s do have a galling problem in the receiver area due to soft aluminum. I will look into having the receiver hard coat anodized. I want a black receiver anyway. |
| The only problem with the 7400 is the fact that it is not made to be a sustained fireweapon, no cranking out several hundred rounds with no cleaning and no stopping. A cheap fal could still be purchased and tuned to work, mags are cheap, and the gun can possibly be tuned by you if you are mechanically inclined. A garand, m1a, cetme, hk91, galil fal and a couple of others are first and foremost made to work under conditions that a normal sporting rifle might find difficult, and they are made to last, lots of rebuild garands at 50+ years with a mishmash of parts still go bang every time you pull the trigger. If you want to save money and or live in kommifornia, there are better choices out there. |

I have a SWAT magazine article from a few years ago where they ran 1200 rounds through a 7400 in one test session. No hiccups, no cleaning. They did have the chamber opened up a bit as they are supposedly on the tight side from the factory. Reliablity could be enhanced by opening up the gas port a little. As cheap as these are used, I will still build one when I get stateside. I'll do a complete report of all mods and problems encountered. I will also look at having the receiver modified to accept FAL or M14 mags. Maybe something for Kurt at KKF to take a look at doing. |
