| I'm considering a purchase of a Century C91 (HK91 Clone). Based on what I've read, this is not a CETME (owner says it takes HK mags and not CETME mags). Rifle looks in good shape and comes with 4 mags. I realize this is not a true HK91, but thoughts on this are appreciated. Seller is asking $650. |

This was one of the first rifles I bought when i moved to NH. Before I knew much at all about HKs, G3s or CETMEs, I thought it was pretty cool and was happy to buy it. The more I researched about the aforementioned rifles as well as the C91 itself, the more it became apparent to me how poor the C91 was fit/finish wise, and I don't even know how the bolt gap would have held up, because I had never checked it. I don't know about the one you are looking at, mine had a CETME bayonet lug, CETME flash hider (that literally could unscrew itself during firing, as there was no spring clip like on a G3 flash hider), a crappy black U.S. made handguard with no heat shield, and an equally U.S. cheesy U.S. made plastic buttstock with no sling mount cutout on the stock. Getting an original collapsible G3A4 stock to fit on the receiver was a PITA that could only be accomplished with the help of a hammer (and the same goes for getting it off). CETME mags IIRC did fit, as well as HK mags, but I don't think I function tested too many CETME mags for it. I paid about $550 in NH for it. That was in 2005. No way in hell I would ever advise somebody to spend $650 on one of them now. The *NEW* CETME "type" 308 rifles Century is releasing (built on PTR 91 receivers, not Century ones) MAY be worth a shot, and sound like they wouldn't cost too much more than what this person is trying to sell the C91 for. Save your money for something you will not be trying to sell down the road in 6 months to a year. My .02 |
| Wound up getting it for six. Everything seems like it's checking out ok. The guy I bought it from said he put a couple hundred through it with no FTFs or FTEs, (will see). The guy I got it from seems like the type who would've taken it to a smith at the first hint of an issue (dress and car). Now I'm having a data dump, on the mag well it says 308 cal not 7.62x51. I know I should should 7.62, but would I be ok shooting 308 (FMJ)? |

| Finally got a chance to take it apart, looks like the owner didn't clean it from his last range trip (at least I know it was shot). Gave it a really good cleaning. Looking for HK marks, but not certain where/what to look for. Fit/finish seem to be okay, I don't have any feelers so I can't check the bolt gap just yet. Went ahead and ordered the OD stock set from RTG. The 4 HK mags fit very well, just need a slight bump to seat, but there's no wobble. Will post pics once I get the OD stock set installed |

As long as everything checked out in spec and the sights are straight, she should run like a top.
With it being a Century, just check the bolt gap here and there to make sure you're not losing it fast. Most of their recent CETME/HK hybrids were fine. My brother had one built in 2012 I believe and it never had a problem, bolt gap was good and stayed good. They also have a new C308 model out for 2015 which is essentially what you have, a mostly CETME rifle with some HK parts and compatibility. When the price drops to $500-$600ish I might pick one up. |
A little better pic. It's stamped on the side Century C91 Sporter, and has the HK91/G3 style rear sight. The muzzle brake does appear to be one from the CETME rifle (not pictured), and not the regular 91/G3 style brake. I've seen on a couple of different forums folks like this brake better than the HK one. Something I did notice...it does not have the SEF trigger group, yet when you move the selector below the F, there appears to be a 3rd notch. You can squeeze the trigger and you will here the hammer fall. Do all the C91s come like this (is this a secondary "Fire" setting)?
