I am brand new to reloading.  I am starting with the following:

Trimmed once fired brass
Win 205 SR Primers
55g Hornady FMJ
Varget

I am using a Lee Perfect Powder and have it calibrated and set up per the instructions.  I checked every 5th round with a Lee Scale and they all were between 25.4 and 25.6 grains.

25.5 is the recommended starting load for Varget and 27.5 is the max.  Well the cases I have filled are basically filled to the beginning of the neck.  I do not see how 2 more grains could fit in it......   O was assuming that they would be about half full or so.  Keep in mind that these are my FIRST reloads so I really do not have a clue as to how full each case should be.  As far as I know my scale is way off (even though I zeroed it per the instructions.

Is this where the fill should be?  I need to know before I seat the bullets.

Thanks in advance for helping a noob out!

Different powders will fill to different points in the case depending on powder and some loads are compressed

From what I have read this is not a compressed load and I do not think the 55 fmj would compress it anyway.  I just wanted to make sure this was a normal "fill rate".  I hope to shoot them tomorrow and you can bet that the first 2 or 3 will be shot with the AR as far away from my face as possible.  The spent brass will be checked as well......

To get 27 grains of Varget in a .223, you have to use a drop tube (a long necked funnel).  That helps the powder settle better.

The bottom of the neck is normal fill for 25 gr. of Varget.  You should be able to seat a bullet on that with no problem.  You will hear some crunching as you seat it.

Thank You!  I will be seating bullets with a calmed mind in a few minutes!

i agree it's normal. i've been using varget and 55 gr hornady boat-tail fmj for close to a year now. dipping the case directly in the powder container and filling it to the max will still put you within the range. that's partly why i like this combination - you'd really have to deliberately do something in order to overcharge this combo.

Yes, that fill level is normal.  Keep an eye on that varget charge.  Many reloaders on here, including me, throw below target, trickle up and weigh each varget charge.  Shorter cut, extruded powders or spherical powders throw with better accuracy.

I don't think it's possible to overload a .223 case with Varget and still put a bullet in it.

I will be switching to H335 or 748 (I think?) soon.  I only got the Varget because that is all that was available locally last week................
