Would anyone have good load data for RG4895 (surplus military powder) for the .223/5.56 (55 and 62 gn FMJ)?
I've got 10 lbs and no load info! Haven't been able to get any info on it. Thanks |

Quoted:
RedFalconBill: 55 and 62 g. FMF BT From Widener's website: "Burn Rate is similar to IMR4895", so I would start with a minimum IMR4895 load and work up from there. 55gr - 23.0gr 62gr - 22.5gr You will find your sweet spot somewhere between 24.0gr and 25.5gr, but I do not like to just give out random loads. I use Remington 71/2 or CCI-BR-4, mostly. If I cannot find these, I use CCI-450's or CCI-#41. Remember to weigh every 10th charge or so because it doesn't meter well in some measures. Lastly, when going back and forth between ball and extruded powders, I clean my barrel, just to be sure that it is my poor shooting, and not the residue in my barrel, which gives me patterns instead of groups. Good luck! |

I have been trying to backfit RG4895 into a custom powder model in QuickLoad. It is very close to IMR4895 (not H4895) from what I see. I am doing this based on experimental density measurement and chrono muzzle velocity measurements using a Rem 700 .308. It seems that the kJ / kG energy density may be a tad lower but not enough to make much difference.
At this point I would agree with the other poster. Using IMR4895 load data would result in a close but conservative result based on IMR4895 performance predictions in the load data or QL. Then you can work your way up if need be. As you know the RG4895 was from pulls so it is not a canister grade, but a repackaged bulk grade. Now that I have invested the time and played with it, I would like to have another keg if you know someone who has an extra. Wideners advises that was a one time deal, and there is a high probability that they will see no more. [tested against swap and trade prohibitions in the Afrcom CoC]. |

CCW: sorry I don't know of another source. I've blown it twice, once with IMR4895 and now this RG4895 with Weidner's, I should have ordered 25 lbs instead of 10 –– hope more surplus like this become available sometime in the future. I've had good luck loading with it (IMR), and it's less expensive, so I get to do a lot of shooting! |
