A close friend was puzzled when he ran out of Hogdon CFE powder too soon.  The number of filled rounds was about half of what the 8 lb. container should have yielded.  Turns out that he was shorted the powder somewhere through the distribution chain.  He did not think to weigh the container when he bought it.  It was sealed,

Lesson to be shared; Weigh check the powder containers when (before) you buy them.

Scam? I question your friends math. "Turns out that he was shorted the powder somewhere through the distribution chain." Oh, is that what Hodgdon said, or is that a conclusion pulled from someones anus?

Yeah not likely.

how many loads does he think he should get out of a pound of powder?

If purchased through normal channels, then it's more likely your friend spilled a lot in production.

We went through the math and it is right. The container had powder taken out somewhere through the chain.

Hogdon was contacted with the lot numbers and it did not leave there without the right amount.

They have been seeing this frequently according to a Hogdon.

Do you have proof of them saying this? It sounds like a load of crap. What you are saying is someone removed the lid without breaking the seal ring, removed the paper seal, removed powder then put all of it back on to not be noticeable.

I could see that happening.  Some will claim BS until it happens to them, but think about it!

There is not much powder to be bought on store shelves.  I'm just getting into reloading, and already I'm stopped from using my new press due to no available powder.  If something is in that MUCH demand, some greedy A-hole is going to pilfer some and sell it as new, trying to either get free powder for themselves or sell off the extra.

If this wasn't a gun forum some dipshit libtard would blame it on conservative greed.  Pretty sure this is a "liberal shakedown" though, pun intended ;)(bad powder joke ok)

What was his powder charge per round and how many rounds did he make?

He can't tell the difference when picking up something that is 4lbs vs 8lbs?

That right there.

I am also one more person who would like to know exactly how many rounds were loaded from that particular keg.

Without a lot more information, this is how crappy and really stupid rumors start on the internet and soon become urban legends with legs of their own.

I honestly don't know how this would happen if purchased from a reputable dealer, now if he purchased from Joe Shit the Ragmen I could see possibly getting screwed.

Not Saying this is what happened, but I can think of one possibility.

Hodgdon uses the same size container for both the 4lb. and 8lb. offerings of many of their powders.

Also their labels are quite easy to cleanly peel off.

If a seller were shifty enough to try it, they could swap labels from a 4lb keg and 8lb keg.  Keep the 8lb for them self and sell the 4lb labeled as an 8lb.  This would maintain the integrity of the sealed cap.

But again, I could not see any major retailer trying this.  Maybe if it was bought second hand from a scammer or something.  Or even possibly mislabeled at packaging, who knows.

Next time he should compare weights with other jugs on the shelf...

I wonder if OP went in on half for the jug and when OP didn't get as many rounds from his buddy this was the excuse...

I would certainly notice if a newly purchased container was half full.

perhaps he's been shooting double charged rounds this entire time!

I would say this -

To the OP:  Okay, we heard you.

To the Moderator(s):  Lock this thread.  This is a technical forum.

I recommend that because I wonder what this Forum going to get out of this thread?  The OP offers no facts or proof and has not answered the detailed questions asked.  It is not even a first-hand experience, it is the OP's "friend".

I agree with ThePontificator, this is GD fodder.
