I'm looking to explore a different powder for loading 9mm.
Currently I'm using long shot. My only complaint is it's a bit expensive and a little dirty. I'm considering buying one of the following. True Blue Or CFE pistol . This will be loaded under lead 147s but I'm considering moving to a lighter bullet. Thoughts? |
| It's not on your list, but I've really been liking titegroup for plinking. I assume it's mostly plinking you're trying to do with 9mm. The powder isn't as "forgiving" as the min and max are closer than a lot of other powders but you use less of it and it's usually cheaper than other powders. I have loads right now with it made up for 357, 9 and 45. |

I use Power Pistol for all jacketed loads in 9mm and .40 S&W. Lots of powders work well. I would switch to something faster is I ever shot lead or plated bullets in these calibers.
Power Pistol gets a bad rap for muzzle blast and flash but that hasn't been my experience with normal velocity loads. Light (135 & 150) bullets in .40 and warm loads of PP definitely create a flash and concussion. Standard velocity (925 to 975 fps) 180 grain loads are fine. Very accurate and clean burning in both calibers. Reliability has been 100%. Hornady recommends it for use in 9mm. Since I feed my handguns a steady diet of their bullets I simply followed their suggestion. I'm going to try True Blue next for light loads in .41 Magnum. If there's any left over I'll experiment with 9mm. |

OP didn't mention if his lead bullets were coated or not either. A plain uncoated lead bullet will be dirty no matter what powder is used to propel it.
I shoot powder coated cast bullets with old school Bullseye and Unique and others. I don't have any complaints or favorite powders. They are work fine. Motor |
| There are lots of good choices available depending on your use. I've used or use Bullseye, Win231/HP38, TiteGroup and Power Pistol. I like Power Pistol or BE-86 for FMJ ammo. I would try Bullseye, Unique or Win231 for lead bullets. I haven't had great luck with 147 grain 9mm plated bullets and Power Pistol. |

Titegroup is very economical as you generally use tiny charges.
BUT titegroup is hot, as in temp level hot, your barrel will heat up, brass is very hot. Bullseye is a great pistol powder if you can find it, and cooler. I have used AA#5 but had lots of unburned powder in a glock19. AA#2 is a great powder but expensive and hard to find (or used to be). |

Hard to beat Titegroup.
Cheap, available, accurate, multi caliber use, meters exact, fairly clean and charge wise economical. CFE Pistol second choice. Unique is good for many uses but I find it dirty and stinky, just not as bad as the old formula and meters poorly for me. True Blue is to costly for my liking and hard to get for me, but would be a great first choice otherwise. |

Personally, CFE Pistol is my go-to. I use it for everything from 115gr screamers and 9mm major loads to soft 147gr subsonics. It's clean burning, meters extremely well, and is readily available everywhere at this point.
I'll be buying another 8lb container by the end of the year. |
