I recently went to the Stainless Steel media and is fantastic!
I want to pre-clean my brass so I don't scratch the inside of the dies. 1.) Do I need to pre-clean, or I'm wasting my time? 2.) If I do pre-clean, should I just throw in the wet tumbler for a 1/2 hour or so or let it soak in water/Lemi-shine for the night? Thank you, Crittle |

**disclaimer, I don't wet tumble - yet.
If you want to clean with the primers out so the pocket gets cleaned, you have at least a couple of choices. 1) Vibrate in walnut/corn cob for 30 minutes, resize/decap then wet tumble. I think this will be the way I do it so if I have any rifle cases, the lube will be removed. 2) deprime with an universal depriming die, then wet tumble. Then resize/decap. Of course, with rifles, you'll still have lube to remove. This'll also be a extra trip through the press compared to option 1. |

AeroE- I Should have been more clear. I want to pre-clean, before I size and and deprime. After deprime I will let in tumble for another 3 hours to get the primer pockets clean. Now I'm really not confused. The whole point of cleaning brass is to do this step before sizing. Inspect the brass for cracks and other defects while it's easier to spot, and then size. Before sizing is the only tumbling to clean step that matters, all the rest is to obtain shine, which you will promptly ruin by pulling a trigger. The primer pockets do not need to be pristine clean, it simply doesn't matter until the carbon builds enough to interfere with primer seating. But, if that is the process you want to follow, then clean again after the primers are out. I recommend you do the first cleaning to prep the brass for sizing, i.e., a 30 to 60 minute tumble in clean walnut is sufficient, then do the stainless pins thing after sizing and depriming to get the insides of the cases and the primer pockets clean. You may need to adjust the detergent in the solution since this step will also delube the cases. |

Thank you, Crittle Here I am, I was out in the shop changing an AR Mil forend to a free float Hogue for a buddy from work. Turned out great. He also stuck a 223 case in his new Hornady sizing die, he got it out without damaging the die. Turned out he was not using enough FA spray lube. Now to your question, here is how I do my case prep; Deprime dirty fired cases in universal decapping die. I use a Lee, about $10. Then comes wet tumbling, cleans case inside and out and the primer pocket comes out spotless. Lube and size, I use FA or Dillon spray lube. Delube in vibrating tumbler for 1/2 hour in plain corn cob. You could wet tumble here if you wanted, but I don't. Remove crimp if needed, uniform PP, trim and debur. Case prep complete. Good luck |
