Is there such a thing?
How do you tell?

No such thing - not enough evil features to make the Federal ban.

Only if you (1) live in an AWB state and (2) the mini-14 possessed the requisite evil features prior to the AWB being enacted.

I don't think the mini-14 was on the Federal AWB list  (1994-2004)...may it rest in peace  Also, a stock mini does not have a pistol grip, bayonet lug, or flash hider.  If your state has a strick AWB that includes any semi-auto rifle with detachable mag & includes a grandfather clause, then yes there would be such a thing as a pre-ban mini-14.

The mini-14 GB version did have those features.

Like any other 223 caliber rifle before the ban the mini was released with a factory folding stock, I think this was called the GB version. It had wooden stock with a pistol grip and metal folding arm and butplate. I like the stock but the old style sights never held zero for me. Strangly enough they changed the sights now so they actually work.

There were factory folders w/ just the folding stock.  The GB (Gov't Barrel) had a bayo lug and flash suppressor, they can be found with or without the folder.
