I am now reloading 223 & 6.8.
I see many types of primer pocket prep tools. Brushes to clean. Flash hole deburring tool. Cutters. I am not using mil brass. What primer pocket prep tools add value to accuracy? How often. I am starting my 3rd round on some brass. |

Sir, there are some that will dispute the need to do any primer pocket prep, but in answer to you specific question as regards adding value to accuracy, in my humble opinion the Sinclair Int. primer pocket depth uniformer is a valuable addition to you case prep processes. You will only have to do it once to each case and I recommend you use it in addition to their flash hole duburring tool. JMHO, 7zero1. |

And here they are, I chuck mine in a small battery drill.

| I like the Redding primer pocket uniformer best of all the ones I have tried(haven't tried the Sinclair though because it's not threaded 8-32 to fit the Trim Mate), it cuts better than most and best part is it will screw in my RCBS Trim Mate. Same goes with the flash hole deburring tool, I have three(Lyman, RCBS, & Redding) and the Redding is by far the best and it also has a built in stop so you cant cut to deep and their pilots are very nice as well and can be used on other tools as well(I also use the flash hole tool in my Trim Mate). |

Humm...........let me think (off the top of my head)...........
Just speaking about primer pockets and the flash channel...........there are tools to......... "Treat" the military crimp Uniform the pocket diameter Uniform the depth of the pocket Uniform the flash channel's hole size Uniform the flash channel and remove the bur in the channel And all sorts of combinations and other tools by various makers. But............ What needs to be done and what is nice to have aren't the same thing. What will give you more accuracy and what will give you the best "bang for the buck?" Humm............... So, perhaps you could start by reading a little on the subject of case prep? http://www.6mmbr.com/jgcaseprep.html Mind you that opinions vary and BR folks are very "particular" vs. a High Power Service Rifle shooter vs. a guy who just likes to shoot at cans. The reason that he suggested "not bothering" primer pocket upgrades on your third firing of the brass, is because you've already reached half-life on that brass and your labor is better dedicated to some new cases.
I agree with everyone that primer pocket uniforming should be done, but I have different motives and I say do it more than once. 1. Semi-auto rifles have slam fired before, some with serious consequences. By uniforming your pocket you are giving your primer the deepest possible home, this will insure that it seats below flush. Better accuracy because of more uniform primer strikes is one advantage, but in this style rifle you will not see an improvement in accuracy because of it. At least until the 600 yard line. 2. Once done the first time, it's easier done the second time around. This cleans the pocket from there on out, very little if any metal is removed on the second go round. But big discoveries can and will be made by doing this. First and foremost, you will discover other peoples brass that ended up in your pouch. Whether they have the same headstamp or not, you can seperate them from the hurd this way. They are easy to recognize, the cutter is actually removing metal rather than carbon. I use Sinclairs with a power screwdriver. I can watch TV and uniform at the same time. I can't chew gum, watch TV and uniform at the same time, so one of the three had to go. |

I see a consensus forming. The 6mmBR artilcle was very helpful. I read other helpful articles from that web site. The aurthor mentioned getting bested by a guy with tacticle AR 223 at Rifles Only at 1000yds. My objective is to shoot my AR at 1000yds, and when I get my "match" reloading down, I plan on taking my AR to Rifles Only to do just that.
All the posts help clear the confusion. I getting the Sinclair pocket uniformer and flash hole deburrer. Thanks. |
