I posted this question a week or so ago and somehow it diappeared into no man's land, it was under my topics one day and the next it was gone. When I'm working the press the primer cup will not go all the way back to pick up the primer. It seem as though the seating cup is up to high, just a hair. I've taken the press apart to see if anything was blocking the path and to do a general cleaning. Nothing was blocking the way. What are your thoughts and suggestions? I'm about ready to blow a gasket . I'm out for my Tuesday night shoot cause I won't have enough ammo maybe I can salvage next weeks shoot night.

If the allen head screws that hold the priming system in place gets too loose or if galling starts between the primer bar and the bearing, or you lubed the primer bar or bearing and it's gunked up, it can cause the problem you described.

What I usually do is stop! Remove the 2 screws holding the primer mechanism together, take everything apart, clean, reassemble, dry test it, refill primers, then move on

Have you checked your primer cup seating depth?

Should be between 1.215" to 1.220" measured from bottom of primer slide to top of seating cup.

use the press to compress the cup and spring assembly

carefully loosen set screw, clean as needed and reassemble to proper height.

Use the area between the frame and the bottom of the loading platform to compress the spring, cup, plunger assembly and tighten the set screw.

And, review Figure 12 on page 9 of your manual to ensure that the set screw (#13961) is adjusted correctly.

If you adjuast the height of the primer cup and give it a good cleaning and it still doesn't work, grab the primer bar and manually pull it all the way back. If it picks up a primer, you may have to gently bend the primer bar actuater rod.  Don't over do it. Just enough to push the primer bar back with a little more force.

I run into this every couple 1000 rounds or so. I take off the primer assembly and strip it with brake cleaner, cleaning the moving primer arm parts.

Leaving it dry, I reassemble and go on down the road. I have not nailed where the gunk is coming from but it is there and I suspect it is powder dust and the lubricant I use on the shaft or piston.

I got a dillon 550 for christmas & had the same problem. While reloading 223 shells, it wouldn't pick up a primer. If i pulled the bar further forward just a hair the primer fell in the cup. I just bent the bottom of the rod a little so it put more pressure on the white roller on the primer slide. Picks up a primer every time now. I'm new to reloading rifle & pistol shells though. I've reloaded lots of shotgun shells. My son is 14 and want to get him out more shooting rifles & handguns. With ammo so high I thought a reloader was the way to go. But it's sure expensive trying to get enough equipment & supplies. He loves hunting & shooting. He started turkey hunting with me when he was 10. He's got 3 birds in the four years i've taken him. And bagged his first deer a couple of months ago. Sorry for rambling on, hope bending the rod will fix it for you. If it drops a primer in the cup with a slight pull of the bar, i think it should.

That's the wrong way to adjust it.  Figure 12 on page 9 of your manual showing how to ensure that the set screw (#13961) is adjusted correctly is the right way.

It appears you maybe right, I need to take off the slide when I get home from work to check this.

Mine will do that too when it gets dirty.  Remove the primer bar and clean it and the area it slides in with rubbing alcohol.  Primer residue from decapping gets built up there.

Ha!

I gave up on the fucking thing years ago.  I ditched the operating rod and simple cycle the primer feeder BY HAND!

No more flipped/half flipped, smashed primers, upside down primers and shit!!

FORGET IT!!!  I'll load a little slower knowing I'm loading better.

That was the first thing i tried adjusting and it didn't do any good. There wasn't enough pressure pushing slide forward. It didn't take much to get it where it needed to be. Bent it forward at the bottom bend in the rod (not much) and it hasn't missed a lick yet. I was assuming his reloader was new also & having the problem. But i guess it could of been older and dirty or something. Hope he gets it going ok.

Well I took a pair of channel locks and compressed the primer cup and tighten up the bolt and bingo...I think its fixed. I will give it a try tomorrow.

I just went through the same thing and was posting in the other thread. On my machine the cup was too tall. It measured 1.227 . The pin was the right size so I switched the cup with another I had and it fixed the problem It was under the 1.220 measurement.
