Hello, thanks for any information in advance.  I know close to nothing about FALs so please bear with me.  My brother noticed his L1A1 was shooting into the dirt when he was aiming at a target 50 yards away and discovered the upper was actually pointing slightly down when firing!  There is a small area of play between the stock and upper and it won't close tightly.  The "upper release button/switch" also does not come compltely forward.  He's tried to clean everything and has checked the entire gun out but can't seem to find why it's doing this.  It seems inherently dangerous and obviously kills the accuracy.  Has anybody had this happen or know what could be causing this?  Thanks again.

I've noticed on two Imbel receivers I've assembled into rifles (one on an STG58 kit, one on a SA R1) that the upper doesn't completely "lock" onto the lower as you describe until I relieved the locking lug on the upper some by filing the top of the lug.  I have not had anywhere near as severe a problem as you describe.  The STG58 runs like a scaulded dog and is very accurate, the R1 isn't done yet but I can see no reason why it wouldn't shoot well.

Others may have a more elegant solution so before you get out the file, see what other anwers you get.

Cheers

I've had to slightly "relieve" the locking lug on the upper on a couple of Dan Coonan and Century receivers, but haven't built on an Imbel, yet - although I could imagine the same situation occurring... Some prefer to take some off the frame lock instead, as it's cheap and easy to replace should you screw the job up - so unless you're sure you can handle the task without butchering the upper, you *might* want to consider that route - it depends on what's keeping it from fully latching... For example, I've seen a couple where the bottom of the "foot" was contacting the lower - and in a case like that, taking some off the lock won't help... I would definately fix it before shooting it any more - it should fully latch closed with the locking lever being nearly all the way forward(but not all the way), with no looseness of fit between the upper and lower... If you're not 100% sure you can handle the task, I'd take it to someone who can - after all, you'd hate to screw up your upper or lower... Nearly every FAL I've built required a bit of fitting between the upper, lower, and lock to be correct in lock-up....

PS - a good method to see where the problem lies is to mark the "foot" of the upper with a sharpie marker, and see where the interference problem is - and it could also be between the upper edges of the lower and the underside of the upper receiver....
