I have been reloading .223 for about a year and have done about 3K. While far from being an expert I am not a novice.
I tried to load some H-322 into LC brass today. I have a Harrell's Precision powder loader that has a nice smooth action. I have a Dillon D-Terminator scale that was calibrated before use today. I let it warm up for about 20 minutes before use. I was measuring the powder in a room I think is vibration free. No fans, AC or anything else was on causing an obvious vibration. I could not get good reproduction on the powder. I was shooting for 23.1 Grs and I was varying up to .5 grs, mostly downward. After getting three at 23.1 grs I would do a string of 10 and some of them would be as low as 22.4. To me it has to be one of three problems: The Harrell measure is simply not working right, however, it seems to be smooth. No binding or anything obvious. I am not consistent in my operation of the lever. I paid very close attention to the motion and I think I was doing it as consistently as possible but I could be wrong. The scale is simply jumping around for whatever reason. Several times I put a 700 gr weight on it and it read 699.8-700.1, which I think is fine. For those reading this what do you think is the problem? Don't ball powders like H-322 suppose to meter consistently, especially in a good measurer like a Harrell's? Which is more likely, a drift in the powder measurer or a drift in the scale? |

H-322 is a very short extruded powder that pours almost as well as a ball powder.
Try a baffle in your measure; even a Harrel's will benefit. There's a tutorial in the Gateway thread that shows how to make a baffle, so you can whip up a cardboard one in a couple of minutes to try. I almost hate to tell you this, but your measure throws with the same precision as a Uniflow or Lyman 55. They surely are pretty and nicely made, however. |
