Took it out hunting tonight and it worked fine, but seemed like the batteries might be getting weak.  Brought it back in the house and switched batteries and now it won't turn on at all.  No corrosion in the battery box, yes I checked to make sure they were in right and I get nothing now.

Any idea what this might be?

What was it doing that made you think the batteries were being weak?

Seemed a little dimmer than usual.

Make sure the gain is not lowered. Try a few other batts. If that does not work you can apply 3 v across the contacts on the tube. Still no joy the psu might be going bad. That seems to be going around lately.

Not to scare you, but that is basically what happened to my son while wearing his PVS-7D before the tube died, and the tube no longer shows up an image.

I would apply 3V directly to the leads (a half used CR123) before ruling a dead tube tho...

I feel you worry man, I am sorry; I am going through bad times myself right now, so hopefully your problem gets resolved.

BTW, what brand of tube do you have?

How do I apply a 3v directly to the tube?

You will need to open the battery housing. The contacts will be visible.

Pulled the cover and attached a 3v.  Tube illuminated like normal and looked clear and crisp.  Is this a switch problem?

Glad to hear!

It could be a dead switch, there is an automatic switch off on these, so perhaps that failed?

The battery lowers can have issues. Could be the circuit board, gain adjust or on/off switch. My bet is on the gain potentiometer. Easy fix is to replace the lower battery housing. If you are decent with a meter you can track down what part in the lower is causing the issue and save a few bucks.

If you have the single AA battery housing and it worked when you hooked up a CR123 / 3V directly to the tube, then you might still have a tube issue (it could also still be a bad battery housing). Either way, you should be able to pick up a 2x AA battery housing and not worry about it for a while - plus the 2x AA housing is generally less expensive.

Well if the tube works you can track down the part thats bad and replace it, if your not that savy (im not) just buy a brand new housing and put the tube in it.

You'll all be happy to know that I fixed it with my superior electronics skills.  The piece of metal on the battery cap that completes the circuit fell off and there was no circuit.  I glued it back on and it works flawlessly.

Sometimes being stupid is frustrating.  Now I need to go dig $4 worth of batteries out of the trash.

Better a stupid mistake then a bad tube

All ends well, glad you didn't need to buy a new tube.

That's great man, I am happy for you. Unfortunately for me tho, it ended with a dead tube... but there is always hope :)
