So I shelled out the money and bought a Sig 556. Took it to the range for the first time to zero in the sight, put about 100 rounds through it, and noticed the finish behind the rear of the ejection port getting messed up. No problem I figure, just brass from the ejecting rounds like on an AR. No. It was quickly chipping away at the finish to the bare metal. I am all for "character" and "it is a tool" but this is a brand new gun with only 100 rounds through it. The finish seems to have a very weak bond to the metal and looks like it will keep flaking off. So I call sig and the guy that answers basically says the gun is designed that way, it is normal, and even AR-15s do it. It told him my ARs leave brass marks but don't eat away the finish. Guy is a bit of an ass and takes my name and ph#, and says the gunsmith should call the next day. 2 days later and no call. So I am whining a bit but I expected a little better quality from the gun. Otherwise I am happy with it. |
None of MY FALs, ARs, or any other gun with a properly applied finish does this. The point is if the finish is chipping away (NOT BRASS KISSES) after only 100 rounds, then it is a poor finish job either in product or application, period. Theres no excuse for that, not in a $1200 rifle made in this century.
"Designed that way" my ass. My response would be "Really? You designed your guns finish to chip off? Why, exactly would you do this?" the response should be amusing. |

I honestly didn't read your entire post, if it is the case that it is chipping the finish off to bare metal then you do have a legitimate beef, all i have ever heard of the 556 was the "kissing" issue, i was kinda sick of hearing about it and assumed you were dealing with a similar issue, hence my previous post. |
A picture would really help. I had a problem with some rust on my early number Sig 556. I sent it to them, they completely refinished the receiver and shipped it back in a new case. |
