I have ordered some 55 grain M193s from Hi-Tech Ammo. It will just be some range target ammo and something cheap to reload. I pulled a few out and weighed them. I saw some seemed to have more lead filling up the jacket. They weighed +- 1 grain so I started to measure a few in length. That is when I saw the cannelure was at different heights in the bullet. The heivier set of bullets have the cannelure higher than the lighter ones.

These came out of the same bag on the same 1000 bullet order. What give here? I may call Hi-Tech in the morning. Thanks for any help.

That's ugly.  Looks like you have two different manufacturers there.  Please let us know what Hi-Tech says.

Looks like Winchester bullets.

Made by different machines with a different cannelure setup.

You can sort them out, or load as is.

Did you get 1k or 3k?

For $65 a k, they will make good blasting / plinking bullets.

cannelure position doesn't matter that much if you don't roll crimp.  You can always not crimp, Lee Factory die crimp, or taper crimp (ala Dillon's 223 dies)

I don't crimp my .223, but that would drive me nuts.

Most of the "bulk" stuff is like that, so I doubt Hi-Tech will do anything.  That's just how those are.  There are some with much better concistancy like the Hornady.  For the difference in price, the Hornadys are tough to beat.  I get better accuracy with the Hornadys as well.

That is a bit wierd, possibly indicates different manufacturers.

As wierd as they look, I'd just load 'em, as I don't crimp .223. If you're not crimping, it really doesn't matter where the cannelure is.  Wierd, yes, but not a problem, technically.

About 10 years ago I got 1000 Winchester 55gr FMJs from Midway, they looked just like that.

If it's just for plinking I wouldn't worry about it, while it is ugly it won't hurt anything as long as the bullets are all the same weight.

Well I am here for the range report. I think they will do well if the are +-1gr

That's bad.  I have no advice regarding Hi-Tech, but I would just put a plug in for Hornady 55 gr BT Ball bullets.  Last time I ordered them pretty cheap from Wideners, and they were really good.  I know people want to buy cheap bullets for training and practice, but spend a little more and you avoid headaches like these.

Defiintely would like to see the range report.

I called Hi-Tech today. They said their supplier mixed some bullets. They said the mill spec bullets (I'm guessing M193s) cannelure is set to load to 2.260 coal. The commercial bullets cannelure is for loading to 2.200 coal (I don't know the suplier). I am one of the "lucky" ones to get in on the mixed lot. They were not able to tell me if my future orders would be mixed.

Eta- I'm going to load some to see if there is any difference in poi or grouping betwen the two different bullets. Any of y'all have a pet load for M193ish and varget?
