I have an older RCBS hand primer that takes shell holders and its not seating primers deep enough on the 7mm Rem mags I'm priming. It will prime 223, 243 and 308 just fine but the 7mm's are not even close to flush. I was thinking that it was the old shell holder maybe being a little out of spec so today I bought a new #4 holder but that didn't fix the problem. Has anyone had this problem? Any fixes? I can get the primers seated right by using my press mounted primer unit which I had to dig out of a box as its been off the press for years.

Take the part the primers sits on, pull down the "sleeve" that surrounds the primer, use a paper clip in the hole you see to unsrcew it a little bit. By unscrewing it a bit you make it "longer" so it will seat deeper. I have to do this with some brands/lots of brass. Helps some if the primer pocket is uniformed but sometimes it still has to be done. This is the only way I've found to cure the problem.

I think you described a fix for a bench mounted or press mounted rig.  The older hand held primer tool #90200 does not have that adjustment capability.

When you say not seating deep enough, what exactly do you mean?  Are the primers flush or sticking out?  .003 to .008 below head surface is correct according to SAAMI.

Does the shell holder fit snug in the slot, top of the stalk?

Seems to me the easiest thing to do would be to get a piece of round stock and make a new slightly longer push rod.

Does the shell holder fit snug in the slot, top of the stalk? No it does not fit snug the shell holder lifts a little and rattles around. Thats why I purchased a new holder thinking maybe the other was a little out of spec.

Primer pockets are uniformend, tried 3 different head stamps. Primers seat fine if I use my press mounted primer arm.

Using a RCBS shellholder?

Make a longer seating rod, call RCBS? 1-800-553-5000.

Your slot is worn.  Just put a couple of shims either side of the "top" of the slot (hand primer rig held up-right).  Cut up some coke cans, whatever for shim stock.
This will hold the shell holder "down", bring the case closer to the ram.  That should fix the problem.  Otherwise a few thousandths longer ram would fix the problem also.

Nope, the fixed described is for my RCBS hand priming unit. Appears to be #09540. Posi-Prime Hand Priming Unit. It uses a shell holder and only seats one primer at a time. Must be discontinued now as the ones I see that use a shellholder also have a primer tray attached, mine does not use a tray. It's oooold school.
